{"id":126170,"date":"2026-03-16T21:02:26","date_gmt":"2026-03-16T20:02:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=126170"},"modified":"2026-03-16T21:02:26","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T20:02:26","slug":"lawyer-raises-concern-over-wikes-publicised-welfare-initiatives-for-judges-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/lawyer-raises-concern-over-wikes-publicised-welfare-initiatives-for-judges-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Lawyer raises concern over Wike\u2019s publicised welfare initiatives for judges"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">By Bayo Davids<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">An Abuja-based legal practitioner and activist, Deji Adeyanju, has raised concerns over what he described as the increasing public attention surrounding welfare initiatives for judges by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, warning that such actions could undermine public confidence in the independence of the judiciary.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Adeyanju made the remarks in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, where he questioned what he called the minister\u2019s fixation with announcing welfare packages and improved living conditions for judicial officers.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the lawyer, while the welfare of judges is important for the effective functioning of the justice system, the manner in which such initiatives are publicised could create the perception that members of the bench are beneficiaries of political patronage.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the statement, Adeyanju cautioned that judicial independence does not only depend on whether judges are influenced by political actors, but also on how the public perceives the relationship between the judiciary and the political class.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The statement read in part, \u201cWike\u2019s constant public spectacle around providing welfare for judges is damaging to the judiciary. Judicial independence is not just about whether judges are actually influenced; it is also about whether the public believes they are free from political patronage.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWhen a politician repeatedly positions himself as the benefactor of judges, complete with announcements and fanfare, it inevitably creates the impression that the bench is beholden to political power.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Adeyanju also argued that while it is common for governments at various levels to provide institutional support to the judiciary, such actions are often carried out without public display.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Referring to comments frequently made by the minister during such announcements, he said some state governments support their judicial officers quietly without drawing undue attention to the process.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cSeveral state governments support the judiciary without this level of noise or public display.
