{"id":126578,"date":"2026-04-13T17:28:19","date_gmt":"2026-04-13T16:28:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=126578"},"modified":"2026-04-13T17:28:19","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T16:28:19","slug":"2027-adc-reps-caucus-demands-inec-chairmans-removal-prosecution-over-alleged-bias","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/2027-adc-reps-caucus-demands-inec-chairmans-removal-prosecution-over-alleged-bias\/","title":{"rendered":"2027: ADC Reps Caucus Demands INEC Chairman\u2019s Removal, Prosecution Over Alleged Bias"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div>By Tracy Moses<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Caucus in the House of Representatives has demanded the removal and prosecution of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, over alleged bias, warning that his continued stay in office could undermine the credibility of the 2027 general elections.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Briefing journalists on Monday, at the National Assembly following its inaugural meeting held on Sunday, April 12, 2026, the caucus said its position was reached after a review of political developments in the country and growing concerns over the state of Nigeria\u2019s democratic institutions.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The lawmakers described the situation as \u201can existential threat to our democracy,\u201d raising alarm over what they termed the declining neutrality of the electoral umpire and the perceived compromise within the judiciary.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>According to the caucus, \u201cthe impartiality and neutrality of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission\u2026 to oversee a free, fair, and credible 2027 general elections\u201d has become questionable, citing \u201crecent public statements and actions\u2026 deemed to be compromising, partisan, and conflicted.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>They pointed to allegations linking the INEC chairman to partisan expressions on social media, noting that \u201che previously made a partisan statement on his personal X account\u2026 [and] expressed support for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).\u201d The caucus further stated that he had been accused of posting content alleging Christian genocide in Nigeria.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>While INEC has denied that Professor Amupitan owns the X account in question, the lawmakers insisted that \u201cdigital forensic analysis and other online investigations\u2026 suggest that the account is indeed his,\u201d adding that the development \u201chas raised concerns regarding his transparency, integrity, and trustworthiness,\u201d especially given \u201cthe critical nature of the office he holds.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>On the strength of these concerns, the caucus declared that \u201cin light of these inconsistencies\u2026 [we] hereby call for the removal of Prof. Amupitan from office and advocate for his prosecution,\u201d stressing that such action is necessary \u201cto safeguard the nation against an avoidable descent into undemocratic practices.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The lawmakers also accused INEC of interfering in the internal affairs of the ADC, particularly in relation to the party\u2019s leadership dispute. They alleged that the commission \u201chas abdicated its responsibility as an impartial arbiter and instead intervened in the party\u2019s internal affairs,\u201d adding that it appeared to be \u201crecognizing an illegitimate leadership faction\u201d contrary to the leadership of Senator David Mark.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Further raising concerns, the caucus alleged a troubling nexus between elements within INEC and the judiciary. It claimed that \u201cthe Commission, in collusion with certain elements within the judiciary, is actively working to undermine the aspirations of the ADC,\u201d warning that such actions could prevent the party from fielding candidates in the forthcoming elections.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The lawmakers disclosed that \u201ccredible information at our disposal suggest that certain individuals within the judiciary and INEC are collaborating to influence the outcome of a case\u201d scheduled for April 14, 2026, describing the development as a serious threat to judicial independence and democratic fairness.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Citing provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, the caucus maintained that \u201cno court in Nigeria shall entertain jurisdiction over any suit or matter pertaining to the internal affairs of a political party,\u201d insisting that any deviation from this provision would amount to a breach of the law. It added that \u201cthat\u2019s what INEC is enabling by its actions and pronouncements concerning the internal affairs of the ADC.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In response, the caucus announced plans to escalate the matter to the National Judicial Council, stating that \u201cwe have concluded plans\u2026 to submit a petition before the NJC\u201d to investigate \u201cpolitically exposed judicial officers\u201d and recommend appropriate sanctions, including possible removal from the bench.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The lawmakers emphasized that their actions were driven by the need to safeguard democratic institutions, noting that \u201cwe are compelled to act in response to the existential threat to our democracy,\u201d especially at a time when \u201ccritical segments of society\u2026 [are] losing faith in the judiciary and electoral authorities.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>They also lamented what they described as a decline in judicial standards, recalling that even during the military era, the judiciary \u201cboasted esteemed jurists\u2026 who delivered discerning judgments despite the authoritarian regime,\u201d warning that such figures \u201cwould be deeply disturbed\u2026 by the current trend of questionable judgments, contradictory interim decisions, and overt judicial overreach.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Echoing concerns raised by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the caucus criticized the growing perception of judicial compromise, particularly the practice of political patronage.
