{"id":126704,"date":"2026-04-23T17:27:31","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T16:27:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=126704"},"modified":"2026-04-23T17:27:31","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T16:27:31","slug":"fg-rakes-in-%e2%82%a64-95bn-tax-in-two-months-analysis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/fg-rakes-in-%e2%82%a64-95bn-tax-in-two-months-analysis\/","title":{"rendered":"FG rakes in \u20a64.95bn tax in two months &#8211; Analysis\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">By Godswill Michael<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the Federal Government remitted a combined \u20a64,945,143,177.87 to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) now Nigeria Revenue Service between February and March 2026.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">An analysis of remittance records obtained on Thursday from Govspend shows that the payments, largely tied to Value Added Tax (VAT), withholding tax deductions, and statutory levies, were made across multiple MDAs, with a handful accounting for the bulk of contributions.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Leading the chart is the Federal Co-operative College, Oji River, which remitted about \u20a61.46 billion, followed closely by the Federal Ministry of Works with approximately \u20a61.35 billion.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Other major contributors include:<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu &#8211; \u20a6565.53 million (tax deductions and VAT on contracts), Police Formations and Commands &#8211; \u20a6304.47 million (VAT and statutory deductions on procurement payments) Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital &#8211; \u20a6146.20 million (withholding tax and VAT remittances)<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Federal College of Horticulture, Dadin-Kowa, Gombe &#8211; \u20a6141.01 million (contract-related tax obligations)<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Energy Commission of Nigeria &#8211; \u20a6139.72 million (VAT and project-linked deductions)<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sheda Science and Technology Complex, Abuja &#8211; \u20a6128.29 million (statutory tax remittances), Sokoto Rima River Basin Development Authority &#8211;\u00a0 \u20a6113.67 million (withholding tax on executed projects)<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (Headquarters) &#8211; \u20a687.38 million (VAT and contractor deductions)<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Breakdowns of individual transactions indicate that many of the remittances were linked to payments to contractors and service providers, where MDAs deducted VAT, typically at 7.5 per cent and withholding tax before forwarding the funds to FIRS, in line with public finance regulations.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The remittances come at a time when Nigeria is intensifying efforts to expand its tax base amid mounting fiscal pressures, rising public debt, and declining oil revenue reliability.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Recent reforms, including proposed tax harmonisation measures and stricter enforcement of remittance compliance, have placed MDAs under increased scrutiny to ensure timely transfer of collected taxes.
