Rhode Island became the tenth U.S. state to legalize same-sex marriage Thursday with a 56-15 vote.<\/p>\n
Just before he signed the legislation into law, Gov. Lincoln Chafee took to the steps of the Rhode Island State House, where he told a jubilant crowd, \u201cToday we are making history \u2026 we are living up to the ideals of our founder.\u201d<\/p>\n
He went on to note, \u201cWhen your belief and heart is in something, it\u2019s easy work. I am proud to say that now, at long last, you are free to marry the person you love.\u201d<\/p>\n
Echoing those sentiments was Rhode Island House Speaker Gordon Fox, who teared up noted, \u201cTrue equality is something that is inherently human.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fox, who is openly gay, spoke about his longtime partner Marcus. He then added, \u201cWe\u2019re not going to be talking about same-sex marriage anymore, we\u2019re going to be talking about marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n
As the Associated Press is reporting, the new law will take effect on Aug. 1.<\/p>\n
