The minority caucus in the House of Representatives has commenced consultations on a possible replacement for Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, following growing indications of his political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The position of Minority Leader is traditionally occupied by a member of the opposition party with the highest number of seats in the House and serves as the coordinating voice of opposition lawmakers in the Green Chamber.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Since the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly in 2023, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has retained the minority leadership position despite internal crises and a wave of defections that have continued to weaken the party\u2019s influence in the National Assembly.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Chinda, who represents Obio\/Akpor Federal Constituency of Rivers State, emerged as Minority Leader at the inauguration of the House and has remained one of the most prominent opposition figures in the chamber, frequently leading debates and articulating opposition positions on major national issues.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
However, recent political developments in Rivers State and growing coalition talks ahead of the 2027 elections appear to have reshaped political calculations within the opposition caucus.<\/div>\n

The move to search for Chinda\u2019s replacement follows indications that several lawmakers elected on the platform of the PDP in the 2023 general elections may have already aligned with other political interests and are only awaiting the appropriate time to formally announce their new affiliations.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Against this backdrop, speculation over Chinda\u2019s political future intensified last week after he appeared before the governorship screening panel of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja ahead of the 2027 Rivers State governorship race.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The development came as a surprise to many within both the opposition and ruling party camps, particularly because Chinda had until recently remained one of the most visible defenders of the PDP in the House.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The Rivers lawmaker was subsequently cleared for the APC governorship primaries alongside the suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Within political circles in Rivers State, Chinda is widely believed to enjoy the backing of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, whose influence continues to shape political alignments in the state.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The growing wave of defections and coalition-building efforts ahead of the 2027 elections has further heightened uncertainty within the opposition bloc in the National Assembly, as lawmakers struggle to maintain cohesion amid mounting pressure from the ruling APC.<\/div>\n

Speaking exclusively to Pointblanknews.com, a member of the House who recently defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), an emerging coalition platform, disclosed that consultations were already underway to determine who would lead the opposition caucus once pending defections are formally announced.<\/div>\n

The lawmaker, who spoke in confidence, expressed surprise over Chinda\u2019s political move, describing politics as fluid and driven by shifting interests and alliances.<\/div>\n

\u201cDefection is not really an issue, but the manner he (Chinda) did it caught some of us unaware. There was no defection that Nigerians knew of, but they woke up to hear that a key opposition figure in parliament had attended the screening of the ruling party.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThe day it happened, we knew there was work to be done. Of course, we (NDC) will play a major role in this, but there is no need to rush. The caucus will have a new leader at the right time,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n

Another lawmaker, who was elected on the platform of the Labour Party but has since joined the NDC, also confirmed that discussions on Chinda\u2019s replacement were ongoing.<\/div>\n

\u201cBy the time we officially know those who have moved parties, the issue of the Minority Leader of the House will be resolved. Let us be patient,\u201d the lawmaker said.<\/div>\n

Also speaking on the development, Hon. Chinedu Obika, member representing AMAC\/Bwari Federal Constituency of the Federal Capital Territory, said a collective decision would be taken by the minority caucus at the appropriate time.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
According to him, most lawmakers are currently focused on their respective party primaries ahead of the next political phase.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThere will be a decision in that regard by all concerned, but for now everybody is concentrating on the primaries until the House resumes,\u201d Obika said.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
In the days leading to the recent recess of the House, the Deputy Minority Whip, George Ozodinobi, presided over caucus activities in Chinda\u2019s absence, fuelling speculation that he could emerge as a leading contender for the position if the seat becomes officially vacant.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
However, it remains unclear whether opposition lawmakers will rally behind Ozodinobi or settle for another member as the minority caucus moves to reposition itself ahead of the next legislative session and the evolving 2027 political landscape.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Efforts to reach Chinda for comment on the development were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.<\/div>\n
