Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have repelled an attempted attack by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters on a military position in Cross Kauwa, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, killing a terrorist cameraman and recovering materials the military says point to the involvement of foreign operatives.<\/p>\n

The Nigerian military said the attack occurred at about 10:20 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, when the insurgents attempted to infiltrate and overrun a military base under the cover of darkness.<\/p>\n

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Acting Military Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni, said vigilant troops of the 19 Brigade, Sector 3, detected the advancing terrorists early and responded decisively, forcing them to abandon the assault.<\/p>\n

“The successful defence of the location further demonstrates the vigilance, combat readiness and operational effectiveness of troops who continue to deny terrorist elements freedom of action across the North East Theatre,” Goni said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

According to the military, intelligence gathered after the failed attack indicates the terrorists intended to loot cholera medical supplies from the military location, a development it said supports recent intelligence suggesting a cholera outbreak within ISWAP camps.<\/p>\n

“The attempted looting further lends credence to recent intelligence reports of a cholera outbreak within terrorist enclaves, as well as reports of the execution of some affected members by the group,” the statement added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The military said one of those killed during the exchange of fire was a terrorist cameraman. Troops subsequently recovered a Sony camcorder containing what it described as operational footage and propaganda materials.<\/p>\n

Preliminary forensic analysis of the recordings, the military said, indicates that the failed operation was coordinated by four senior ISWAP commanders with the support of three foreign terrorist facilitators.<\/p>\n

“They include a Palestinian Arab identified as Abu Ishaq, assessed to be ISWAP’s overall trainer; a Moroccan Arab identified as Abu Thaiba, a medical doctor serving within the terrorist network; and another Arab operative whose identity is yet to be established,” Goni stated.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The military said the findings underscore what it described as ISWAP’s continued reliance on foreign expertise and transnational terrorist networks.<\/p>\n

“The presence and active involvement of these foreign nationals further reinforces intelligence assessments that ISWAP continues to benefit from external support, specialist expertise and transnational terrorist linkages,” Goni added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Troops also recovered terrorist uniforms, several rounds of PKT and 7.62mm Special ammunition, alongside other combat equipment during follow-up exploitation operations.<\/p>\n

According to the military, satellite imagery and credible human intelligence indicate that the fleeing insurgents evacuated the bodies of some of those killed, while several others escaped with gunshot wounds.<\/p>\n

Two soldiers sustained injuries during the firefight and were airlifted for advanced medical treatment.<\/p>\n

“Both personnel remain in stable condition,” Goni said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Describing the outcome as another major operational success, the military said the failed assault highlights the increasing challenges faced by ISWAP in mounting coordinated attacks against troops in the North-East.<\/p>\n

It added that the failed infiltration “represents yet another significant operational setback for ISWAP” and reaffirmed Operation HADIN KAI’s commitment to sustaining offensive operations, protecting vulnerable communities and dismantling terrorist networks until lasting peace is restored across the region.<\/p>\n
