{"id":128541,"date":"2026-07-21T22:06:01","date_gmt":"2026-07-21T21:06:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=128541"},"modified":"2026-07-21T22:06:01","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T21:06:01","slug":"cbn-retains-interest-rate-at-26-5-amid-global-uncertainties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/cbn-retains-interest-rate-at-26-5-amid-global-uncertainties\/","title":{"rendered":"CBN retains interest rate at 26.5% amid global uncertainties"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>By Godswill Michael<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Tuesday retained the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR), the country&#8217;s benchmark interest rate, at 26.5 per cent, citing persistent global uncertainties despite signs of easing inflationary pressures.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The decision was announced by the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, while briefing journalists at the end of the committee&#8217;s 306th meeting in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cardoso said all 11 members of the MPC unanimously voted to maintain the current monetary policy stance after reviewing recent domestic economic developments and the global outlook.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said,\u00a0<strong>&#8220;The 11 members of the MPC who were present at the meeting voted unanimously to retain the Monetary Policy Rate at 26.5 per cent.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The committee also left all other key monetary parameters unchanged.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to Cardoso,\u00a0<strong>&#8220;The MPC also voted to retain the Cash Reserve Ratio for Deposit Money Banks at 45 per cent, Merchant Banks at 16 per cent and Non-TSA public sector deposits at 75 per cent.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The committee equally retained the Liquidity Ratio at 30 per cent and the asymmetric corridor around the MPR at +500\/-100 basis points.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Explaining the decision, the CBN governor said although recent data showed a marginal moderation in headline inflation, the committee considered it necessary to maintain a cautious policy stance in view of mounting global risks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said,\u00a0<strong>&#8220;Although headline inflation moderated marginally, global uncertainties have heightened, which is why maintaining a cautious monetary policy stance remains appropriate.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cardoso noted that renewed geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have increased uncertainty in the global economy, contributing to higher energy prices and posing fresh inflationary risks for many countries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite these external challenges, he said the Nigerian economy has continued to demonstrate resilience, supported by ongoing monetary and fiscal policy reforms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The MPC also reviewed developments in the foreign exchange market, external reserves, banking sector stability and inflation expectations before arriving at its decision.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The decision marks another consecutive hold after the aggressive monetary tightening cycle undertaken by the apex bank over the past year to tame inflation, stabilise the naira and restore investor confidence.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Implications for businesses and households<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The decision means lending rates are likely to remain elevated, as commercial banks typically price loans using the benchmark interest rate as a guide. Consequently, businesses seeking credit to expand operations and households requiring consumer or mortgage loans may continue to face relatively high borrowing costs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, by keeping interest rates unchanged, the CBN aims to sustain the fight against inflation, preserve exchange rate stability and reinforce confidence in the financial system.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The outcome also signals that the apex bank remains focused on achieving price stability before considering any policy easing. Analysts say any reduction in interest rates will likely depend on a more sustained decline in inflation, improved foreign exchange market conditions and greater certainty in the global economic environment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Monetary Policy Committee is the CBN&#8217;s highest monetary policy decision-making body. It meets regularly to assess inflation, economic growth, exchange rate developments and other macroeconomic indicators before determining the appropriate policy direction for the economy.
