Fresh concerns have emerged over the welfare of Nigerian Army recruits after an analysis showed that their monthly allowance of\u00a0N10,337.33<\/strong>\u00a0is only sufficient to cover about two days of healthy meals at current food prices, despite the country’s worsening security challenges.<\/p>\n

The analysis, based on the\u00a0Manual of Financial Administration for the Armed Forces of Nigeria (MAFA)<\/strong>\u00a0and the National Bureau of Statistics’ (NBS)\u00a0Cost of a Healthy Diet (CoHD)<\/strong>\u00a0report, highlights the widening gap between the financial realities faced by the military’s lowest-ranking personnel and the demands of securing a nation grappling with insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes.<\/p>\n

A review of the MAFA, obtained by\u00a0Pointblanknews.com<\/em>, shows that under the\u00a0Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Structure (CONAFSS)<\/strong>, an Army recruit earns a monthly allowance of\u00a0N10,337.33<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Using the NBS estimate that the average cost of a healthy diet stood at\u00a0N1,589 per adult per day<\/strong>\u00a0in April 2026, the allowance can purchase only about seven healthy meals. At three meals daily, this translates to roughly two days of feeding.<\/p>\n

The implication is that a recruit’s monthly allowance would be exhausted on food alone within days, leaving little or nothing to cover other personal expenses during training.<\/p>\n

The findings come as Nigeria continues to face one of its most severe security crises in recent years, with military personnel deployed across multiple theatres of operation to combat insurgency in the North-East, armed banditry in the North-West, kidnappings in the North-Central and other forms of violent crime across the country.<\/p>\n

According to data from the\u00a0Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (ACLED)<\/strong>, Nigeria recorded\u00a07,956 conflict events<\/strong>\u00a0between July 2025 and June 2026, resulting in approximately\u00a015,000 deaths<\/strong>\u00a0and exposing an estimated\u00a066.8 million people<\/strong>\u00a0to violence.<\/p>\n

The data indicate that the country averaged\u00a0663 conflict incidents monthly<\/strong>,\u00a0126 weekly<\/strong>, and more than\u00a021 attacks each day<\/strong>, underscoring the heavy burden placed on military personnel.<\/p>\n

The welfare debate gained renewed attention after the\u00a0Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa<\/strong>, recently disclosed that the Federal Government had approved an increase in the monthly salary of soldiers from\u00a0N49,000 to N100,000<\/strong>\u00a0as part of efforts to improve personnel welfare.<\/p>\n

However, the MAFA document, signed in 2017 and reviewed by\u00a0Pointblanknews.com<\/em>, still lists a recruit’s monthly remuneration at\u00a0N10,337.33<\/strong>, while a private earns\u00a0N49,412.75<\/strong>\u00a0under the salary structure contained in the manual.<\/p>\n

The document also shows that\u00a0Lance Corporals<\/strong>\u00a0earn between\u00a0N50,326.50<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0N56,520.58<\/strong>, depending on years of service, while personnel from\u00a0Corporal<\/strong>\u00a0to\u00a0Army Warrant Officer<\/strong>\u00a0receive between\u00a0N51,950<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0N171,793.33<\/strong>\u00a0monthly.<\/p>\n

Even with the proposed increase to\u00a0N100,000<\/strong>\u00a0for privates, rising food prices continue to erode purchasing power.<\/p>\n

Based on the NBS healthy diet benchmark, a soldier earning\u00a0N100,000<\/strong>\u00a0monthly can afford approximately\u00a021 days of healthy meals<\/strong>. For a family of three\u2014comprising a husband, wife and one child\u2014the same income would provide healthy meals for only about\u00a0seven days<\/strong>, based on an estimated household feeding cost of\u00a0N14,301 per day<\/strong>\u00a0for three meals.<\/p>\n

The NBS reported that the average cost of maintaining a healthy diet increased from\u00a0N1,541 in March<\/strong>\u00a0to\u00a0N1,589 in April 2026<\/strong>, representing a\u00a03.12 percent month-on-month increase<\/strong>, reflecting continued food inflation across the country.<\/p>\n

Allowances and Operational Benefits<\/h3>\n

The MAFA explains that military remuneration extends beyond basic salary to include several consolidated allowances under CONAFSS, including rent subsidy, transport allowance, utility allowance, leave grant, hazard allowance, furniture allowance, meal subsidy and uniform maintenance allowance.<\/p>\n

The document also provides additional benefits such as lodging allowances for personnel without official accommodation, packing allowances upon posting, and operational incentives for specialized deployments.<\/p>\n

Personnel deployed for counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations, for example, may receive an additional\u00a0N50,000<\/strong>\u00a0monthly operational allowance, while members of specialized formations such as the Amphibious Force and Special Warfare units are entitled to separate incentives.<\/p>\n

However, these benefits are conditional, deployment-specific or rank-dependent, meaning they are not available to every soldier.<\/p>\n

Many personnel living in military barracks also pay little or nothing for accommodation, while those on active operations receive government-provided meals, reducing some personal living expenses.<\/p>\n

Welfare Gap<\/h3>\n

The MAFA further provides extensive retirement benefits for the\u00a0Chief of Defence Staff<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Service Chiefs<\/strong>, including bulletproof sport utility vehicles replaced every four years, up to 20 support personnel, lifetime medical care within and outside Nigeria, military escorts and retention of personal firearms.<\/p>\n

The manual also outlines retirement packages for generals, colonels and Army Warrant Officers.<\/p>\n

However, the sections reviewed by\u00a0Pointblanknews.com<\/em>\u00a0contain no corresponding retirement provisions for lower-ranking soldiers, raising fresh questions about the long-term welfare of the personnel who constitute the bulk of Nigeria’s fighting force.<\/p>\n
