He argued that worsening economic hardship, rising insecurity and growing public dissatisfaction with governance have created fresh opportunities for Obi to attract broader support across the region.

According to Abdulsalam, Obi’s message of prudent economic management, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance is gaining traction among voters beyond his traditional support base.

He dismissed claims by political opponents that the former Anambra State governor lacks nationwide appeal, insisting that such assertions ignore the party’s expanding grassroots mobilisation and increasing acceptance of Obi in several northern states.

The NDC spokesman said the party has continued to strengthen its structures across the region through sustained engagement with youths, women, community leaders and other stakeholders, expressing optimism that the groundwork being laid would translate into stronger electoral gains in 2027.

“We are confident that Peter Obi will perform much better in northern Nigeria in 2027 than he did in 2023. Nigerians are increasingly looking beyond ethnicity and religion. They want competence, integrity and leadership that can improve their lives,” Abdulsalam said.

The statement added that growing youth engagement across northern communities has further reinforced the party’s optimism, arguing that more young people are embracing Obi’s message of reform and good governance.

It maintained that the worsening cost-of-living crisis, unemployment and insecurity have reshaped political conversations across the country, making governance performance a more significant electoral consideration than ethnic or regional affiliations.

In the 2023 presidential election, Obi won all five South-East states, Lagos State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, while posting strong performances in parts of the South-South.

However, he finished behind the candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) across much of northern Nigeria, where a substantial proportion of the country’s registered voters are concentrated.

Political observers, however, argue that Obi’s challenge extends beyond making fresh inroads into the North. They contend that he must also retain the overwhelming support he enjoyed in the South-East and parts of the South-South in 2023 while expanding his appeal in other regions of the country.

Meanwhile, several prominent South-East political leaders aligned with the ruling APC have, in recent months, urged Ndigbo to support President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid, arguing that backing the incumbent would further integrate the region into Nigeria’s political mainstream and strengthen its influence at the centre.

Among those who have advanced this position are Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo and Minister of Works David Umahi.

They argue that the Tinubu administration has demonstrated its commitment to the South-East through strategic appointments, infrastructure development and increased engagement with the region. Consequently, they have urged Ndigbo to embrace what they describe as the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The APC leaders also maintain that the South-East should not, in their words, “back the wrong horse” again, insisting that aligning with the government at the centre offers the region greater political relevance and improved developmental opportunities than remaining outside the mainstream of national politics.

Their position contrasts sharply with that of Obi’s supporters, who insist the former Anambra State governor remains the most popular political figure in the South-East and continues to enjoy widespread support among young people and many voters across the region.

They argue that Obi’s popularity transcends ethnic and regional boundaries and believe he remains well positioned to mount a formidable challenge in the 2027 presidential election.

Political analysts, however, caution that converting growing public interest into electoral victory will require more than optimism.

They argue that Obi must not only expand his support in northern Nigeria but also preserve his dominance in the South-East and parts of the South-South while building a broad national coalition capable of challenging the APC and other major political parties.

Analysts further note that the battle for the South-East could prove just as critical as the contest for northern votes, with the APC intensifying efforts to convince Ndigbo that aligning with President Tinubu’s administration offers the region greater political relevance and improved access to the centre of power.

How voters respond to these competing narratives is expected to play a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape in the months leading to the 2027 presidential election.

Despite the emerging political contest, the NDC remains confident that its expanding grassroots structures, growing youth support and Obi’s message of economic reform, accountability and inclusive governance will resonate across regional, ethnic and religious divides, positioning the party to mount a stronger challenge for Nigeria’s highest office in 2027.

By Oscar Okhifo The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has dismissed claims that its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, cannot make meaningful electoral inroads in northern Nigeria, expressing confidence that the former…

[5

post-128617","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.8 -
