{"id":128773,"date":"2026-08-04T10:17:43","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T09:17:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=128773"},"modified":"2026-08-04T10:17:43","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T09:17:43","slug":"state-police-bill-for-transmission-to-tinubu-september-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/state-police-bill-for-transmission-to-tinubu-september-3\/","title":{"rendered":"State Police Bill for Transmission to Tinubu September 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>By Lizzy Chirkpi<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Presidency has announced that the draft Executive Bill on state policing will be presented to President Bola Tinubu on\u00a0<strong>September 3, 2026<\/strong>, marking a major step towards establishing the legal framework for the creation of state police across Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Chairman of the Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill and Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, disclosed this on Monday after the group&#8217;s inaugural meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said the working group had adopted a seven-week, milestone-driven implementation plan running from\u00a0<strong>July 27 to September 14, 2026<\/strong>, with the preparation and submission of the Executive Bill package to the President scheduled for September 3.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to Gbajabiamila, once approved by President Tinubu, the proposed legislation will be subjected to nationwide public consultation before being revised and formally transmitted to the National Assembly for legislative consideration.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He explained that the consultation process is intended to give Nigerians the opportunity to examine and make inputs on the proposed legal framework, including its operational safeguards, funding model, institutional structure and transition arrangements.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The resulting Executive Bill package is scheduled for presentation to the President on September 3. Subject to his approval, a national consultation on the completed draft will follow, after which the text and supporting materials will be revised and prepared for formal transmission to the National Assembly,&#8221; he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gbajabiamila said the Presidential Working Group would actively engage Nigerians throughout the process, inviting professional bodies, civil society organisations, security agencies, state governments, traditional institutions, academia and other stakeholders to submit memoranda, position papers and practical recommendations to strengthen the proposed legislation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He stressed that broad public participation would be critical to ensuring the success and credibility of the reform, assuring stakeholders that every submission would be documented, carefully reviewed and considered before the bill is finalised.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to him, while the implementation timeline is ambitious, the committee remains committed to ensuring that the process is thorough, transparent and guided by due diligence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He added that the advisory committee would provide technical oversight throughout the drafting process, review successive versions of the bill and validate key implementation frameworks, including funding mechanisms, governance structures and transition arrangements before the legislation is presented to the President.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The proposed state police legislation forms part of the Federal Government&#8217;s wider efforts to reform Nigeria&#8217;s policing architecture in response to persistent security challenges and longstanding calls for decentralised policing.
