{"id":129260,"date":"2026-09-01T19:28:35","date_gmt":"2026-09-01T18:28:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=129260"},"modified":"2026-09-01T19:28:35","modified_gmt":"2026-09-01T18:28:35","slug":"nigerian-british-taxi-driver-jailed-six-years-after-falling-asleep-at-wheel-killing-motorist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/nigerian-british-taxi-driver-jailed-six-years-after-falling-asleep-at-wheel-killing-motorist\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigerian-British Taxi Driver Jailed Six Years After Falling Asleep at Wheel, Killing Motorist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>By Lizzy Chirkpi<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A 45-year-old Nigerian-British taxi driver, Kolawole Erunkulu, has been sentenced to six years in prison in the United Kingdom after falling asleep at the wheel and causing the death of a 59-year-old motorist in Surrey.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to a statement published by Surrey Police on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, Erunkulu was sentenced at Guildford Crown Court last month after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The fatal incident occurred shortly before 6:30am on Sunday, August 17, 2025, on the A23 in Merstham, Surrey.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Surrey Police said Erunkulu was driving an Audi when it swerved across the carriageway and entered a layby, where it struck Philip Dray, who had safely parked his Volkswagen and was opening the driver&#8217;s door to re-enter the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dray died at the scene.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">An investigation found that Erunkulu had driven for approximately 53 hours during the three days preceding the fatal collision.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Data obtained from his employers showed that his longest period of rest during that time was only seven hours, while other breaks lasted approximately four hours and two hours.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Immediately before the crash, Erunkulu had been working as a taxi driver for about 12 hours, with only brief breaks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Footage from an interior camera fitted inside his vehicle captured him falling into what investigators described as a \u201cmicrosleep\u201d \u2014 a brief episode of sleep lasting only a few seconds during which the brain stops processing information.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During one such episode, the Audi veered across the carriageway and struck Dray in the layby. The vehicle continued moving for approximately 10 seconds before Erunkulu stopped at the next layby.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In sentencing Erunkulu, Her Honour Judge Lees said the footage showed that he was \u201cextremely tired\u201d and had continued driving despite being aware of his condition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The judge said the tragedy could have been prevented if Erunkulu had stopped driving and gone to sleep.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Erunkulu was charged with causing death by dangerous driving in March 2026 and pleaded guilty in June.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He was sentenced to six years in prison after admitting the offence.
