The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has linked the mass deaths and illnesses recorded in parts of Ondo State to suspected methanol contamination in locally prepared alcoholic and herbal concoctions consumed by residents.<\/p>\n

NAFDAC, in an update issued by its Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, on Friday, said laboratory analysis of 15 unlabeled samples collected from the suspected concoctions confirmed the presence of high concentrations of methanol.<\/p>\n

The agency said the incident was first reported in early September after residents of communities including New Town, Odole, Okele, Orita Odigbo, Araromi-Obu and Oniparaga developed sudden and severe illnesses after reportedly consuming the concoctions.<\/p>\n

Odigbo Town and Araromi-Obu were particularly affected, according to the agency.<\/p>\n

NAFDAC said initial reports put the death toll at 31, comprising 20 deaths in Odigbo Town and 11 in Araromi-Obu.<\/p>\n

However, continued surveillance and investigation have raised the number of reported cases to 182, with 48 deaths recorded as of September 17.<\/p>\n

The agency said 90 affected persons had been admitted and discharged, while six remained hospitalised. It added that 31 people were treated as outpatients.<\/p>\n

NAFDAC also reported that five victims had become totally blind, while two others suffered partial blindness.<\/p>\n

The affected persons reportedly presented symptoms including headache, general weakness and body pain, visual disturbances, difficulty breathing and altered consciousness, with some cases deteriorating rapidly.<\/p>\n

Laboratory findings<\/h3>\n

Giving details of its laboratory investigation, NAFDAC said acute oral toxicity tests conducted on laboratory mice showed critically ill animals in all the samples tested.<\/p>\n

It added that about 50 per cent mortality was recorded in animals exposed to six of the 15 samples.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe chemical screening results indicate that eleven (11) samples have cannabis indica, while chemical analysis with Gas chromatography confirmed the presence of high concentration of methanol,\u201d NAFDAC said.<\/p>\n

The agency explained that methanol is highly toxic and can cause severe health effects, including blindness, organ failure and death.<\/p>\n

NAFDAC said the combination of the animal-test mortality and the confirmed presence of methanol \u201cstrongly suggests that the samples pose a serious public health risk.\u201d<\/p>\n

It, however, stressed that confirmatory analyses were still ongoing.<\/p>\n

The agency also disclosed that 15 people had been arrested in connection with the suspected production, sale and distribution of the implicated alcoholic and herbal beverages.<\/p>\n

NAFDAC said further testing would be conducted to quantify the methanol concentration and identify any other possible toxic agents.<\/p>\n

It added that surveillance, medical case management, investigation and risk-control measures were continuing.<\/p>\n

The agency urged residents to exercise caution and avoid consuming unlabelled or unregulated alcoholic and herbal preparations.<\/p>\n

NAFDAC also cautioned that the reported figures remained subject to verification as investigation and surveillance activities continued.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
