The \u201cAK-47 fire\u201d remark by Edo State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Jarrett Tenebe, has triggered fresh concerns over inflammatory political rhetoric ahead of the 2027 general elections.<\/p>\n

Tenebe made the controversial remark on Saturday while addressing APC supporters in Benin City, shortly after the Edo APC leadership announced plans to mobilise 2.5 million votes for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.<\/p>\n

Speaking about those who might attempt to obstruct the party\u2019s mobilisation efforts, Tenebe said: \u201cThose who do not wish us well, who want to create an obstacle for us, I have a prayer for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cSo, anybody who refuses, who wants to stand in our way, for us not to have those votes that we intend to give to Mr President, AK-47 fire.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before making the \u201cAK-47 fire\u201d remark, Tenebe also referred to \u201cHoly Ghost power\u201d and a \u201cgeneral-purpose machine gun\u201d while describing what he called prayers against those who might constitute an obstacle to the party\u2019s objective.<\/p>\n

The comments have attracted criticism from opposition figures and civil society groups, with calls for security agencies to investigate the APC chairman and establish the context and intention behind the remarks.<\/p>\n

The Edo State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) condemned the statement and said it would forward the video to the appropriate authorities for action.<\/p>\n

The party expressed concern that such rhetoric could contribute to political tension and electoral violence ahead of the 2027 elections.<\/p>\n

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has similarly called on the Department of State Services (DSS) to invite Tenebe for questioning over the statement.<\/p>\n

HURIWA said security agencies should determine whether the remarks amounted to a threat or violated any Nigerian law, stressing that political mobilisation should not involve language suggesting the use of firearms against citizens or political opponents.<\/p>\n

The controversy comes amid increasing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections and a series of inflammatory remarks by political actors in different parts of the country.<\/p>\n

In September, Borno State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sainna Buba, was reported to have warned critics of the state government that those who \u201craise\u201d their fingers against the administration would have theirs cut off.<\/p>\n

In Yobe State, APC Chairman Muhammad Gadaka also attracted criticism after telling women at a political rally that he would pay the bride price of women whose husbands divorced them for voting for the ruling party.<\/p>\n

Gadaka later apologised, saying his remark had been misunderstood and was intended as a joke.<\/p>\n

Chairman of Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory, Danjuma Shekwolo, also previously told residents to support the APC or leave the council. He later explained that the statement was made during a meeting with APC youths and loyalists and was not intended to deny residents their rights because of their political affiliation.<\/p>\n

In Osun State, Senator Francis Fadahunsi was also reported to have called on supporters to attack members of the Accord Party ahead of the August 15 governorship election, prompting police action.<\/p>\n

Tenebe\u2019s Previous Controversy<\/h3>\n

Tenebe has previously been at the centre of controversy over his comments concerning the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Peter Obi.<\/p>\n

In July 2025, Tenebe publicly declared that he hated Obi while defending comments by Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo that Obi should notify him before visiting the state.<\/p>\n

During a subsequent television interview, Tenebe maintained his position, saying: \u201cThe opposite of hate is love. If I don\u2019t love you, I hate you. I know I expressed myself, so I do not hide my feelings. I do not like Peter Obi. I still maintain it, and if I do not like somebody, I hate the person.\u201d<\/p>\n

He further described himself as an \u201cextremist\u201d in his political disposition and maintained that he had the constitutional right to express his feelings.<\/p>\n

The latest controversy has renewed attention on the conduct and language of political actors as parties intensify preparations for the 2027 elections.<\/p>\n

Peace Accord<\/h3>\n

The National Peace Accord for the 2027 elections was signed in Abuja in August by presidential candidates and representatives of major political parties.<\/p>\n

The accord, organised by the National Peace Committee in partnership with The Kukah Centre, seeks to promote peaceful and issue-based campaigns while discouraging violence, intimidation and inflammatory rhetoric.<\/p>\n

President Tinubu, who was represented at the signing by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, also pledged the APC\u2019s commitment to the accord.<\/p>\n

In his remarks, Tinubu said the APC rejected violence, hate speech, misinformation and all forms of incitement, particularly on social media, while urging political actors to campaign on ideas and policies.<\/p>\n

The renewed controversy has consequently raised questions about how the commitments contained in the Peace Accord will be enforced as political activities intensify.<\/p>\n

Opposition figures and other critics have repeatedly alleged that inflammatory comments by politically influential persons do not always attract prompt law-enforcement action, particularly when those involved belong to the ruling party.<\/p>\n

The latest calls for an investigation of Tenebe are therefore likely to put the police and other security agencies under pressure to establish whether his reference to \u201cAK-47 fire\u201d amounted to a threat, incitement or other violation of the law.<\/p>\n

As of Sunday, there was no publicly reported statement from the Edo State Police Command announcing Tenebe\u2019s arrest or invitation for questioning over the remark.<\/p>\n

The controversy has also renewed calls for political parties and their supporters to moderate their language as the country moves towards another election cycle, with stakeholders warning that inflammatory rhetoric could heighten tensions and undermine confidence in the electoral process.<\/p>\n

For the 2027 Peace Accord to command public confidence, political actors and their supporters will ultimately be expected to abide by its commitments, while security agencies will be expected to apply relevant laws consistently, irrespective of the political affiliation of anyone whose conduct comes under investigation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
