{"id":129813,"date":"2026-10-05T20:56:04","date_gmt":"2026-10-05T19:56:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=129813"},"modified":"2026-10-05T20:56:04","modified_gmt":"2026-10-05T19:56:04","slug":"fg-releases-%e2%82%a6250m-for-families-of-37-miners-shettima-demands-answers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/fg-releases-%e2%82%a6250m-for-families-of-37-miners-shettima-demands-answers\/","title":{"rendered":"FG Releases \u20a6250m for Families of 37 Miners, Shettima Demands Answers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">By Lizzy Chirkpi<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Federal Government has released \u20a6250 million in support of the families of 37 suspected illegal miners who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Niger State.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Vice President Kashim Shettima announced the intervention on Monday during a condolence visit to Governor Umaru Bago and the people of Niger State in Minna, where he conveyed President Bola Tinubu\u2019s sympathy to the bereaved families.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">But beyond the financial assistance, Shettima demanded answers over the circumstances surrounding the deaths, insisting that anyone found responsible must be held accountable through due process.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">He described the death of the 37 young men while in state custody as a matter of national concern, saying it raised serious questions about the responsibility of government agencies entrusted with the protection of citizens.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe death of 37 young men in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps calls for initial questions,\u201d Shettima said.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said the Federal Government owed the families both justice and an explanation of what happened to their loved ones, stressing that detention or an allegation of wrongdoing did not deprive citizens of their fundamental right to protection by the state.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cNo allegation should diminish that entitlement,\u201d he said, adding that anyone found culpable must answer for his actions.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Vice President also cautioned against turning the tragedy into a political, religious or ethnic controversy, particularly against Governor Bago, urging stakeholders to allow the ongoing investigation to establish the facts.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe should avoid weaponising the departed to demonise Governor Bago.
