The Federal Government has unveiled a 3D-printed prosthetics technology initiative aimed at modernising rehabilitation services, strengthening local technical capacity and reducing Nigeria\u2019s reliance on imported assistive devices.<\/p>\n

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Adekunle Salako, disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja at the 3D-Printed Prosthetics Technology Showcase organised at the Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Board (MRTB) National Secretariat, Daki-Biyu, Jabi.<\/p>\n

Salako said the initiative, being implemented under a United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) project, would modernise prosthetics and orthotics services and improve rehabilitation outcomes for Nigerians requiring assistive devices.<\/p>\n

The project, titled \u201cTransferring Japanese 3D-Printed Prosthetics Technology to Support Landmine Victims in Africa,\u201d<\/strong> is funded by the Government of Japan and was introduced in Nigeria in 2024 under UNIDO Project 240280.<\/p>\n

According to the minister, the technology combines artificial intelligence-driven processes, digital scanning, computer-aided design and 3D printing to facilitate faster and more efficient production of prosthetic devices.<\/p>\n

He said the digital workflow could improve design consistency, shorten production time and potentially reduce costs, thereby expanding access to prosthetic care.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe technology being showcased today offers us an opportunity to address some of those barriers,\u201d Salako said.<\/p>\n

He noted that Nigerians requiring prosthetic devices often face high costs, long distances to rehabilitation centres, a shortage of skilled professionals, lengthy production periods and limited access to suitable materials.<\/p>\n

Such constraints, he said, could affect mobility and limit access to education, employment, family life and participation in community activities.<\/p>\n

Salako, however, cautioned that technology alone could not provide comprehensive rehabilitation, stressing the importance of professional assessment, proper fitting, patient education, follow-up care, maintenance and periodic adjustments.<\/p>\n

\u201cTechnology must always serve the person. A digital scan or a printed component is not, by itself, a complete rehabilitation service,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The minister said the technology should complement, rather than replace, existing prosthetic solutions and professional expertise.<\/p>\n

He urged institutions participating in the programme to establish sustainable systems for equipment management, staff training, maintenance, consumables, quality assurance and patient follow-up to ensure the technology remains functional beyond the project-support period.<\/p>\n

The equipment provided under the initiative includes P&O Printer 3.0 systems, educational-grade 3D printers, 3D scanners, testing devices, replacement components and specialised printing consumables.<\/p>\n

Salako commended the Japanese Government for funding the initiative and UNIDO for designing and implementing the technology-transfer project.<\/p>\n

He also acknowledged Instalimb Japan for providing technical expertise, equipment and knowledge, while commending the MRTB, Nigerian professionals and institutions involved in the programme.<\/p>\n

The minister stressed the need for continuous training as technology, materials and professional practices evolve, urging participating institutions to serve as centres for learning and knowledge-sharing across the country.<\/p>\n

He further called on the MRTB, as the statutory regulatory body for rehabilitation practice in Nigeria, to ensure compliance with professional standards and support the responsible validation and institutionalisation of the technology.<\/p>\n

According to Salako, the initiative could stimulate a broader prosthetics and orthotics ecosystem linking healthcare, education, technical skills, innovation, manufacturing and enterprise.<\/p>\n

He urged Nigerian entrepreneurs, engineers, technicians, health professionals, educators and manufacturers to explore opportunities in rehabilitation technology, saying greater local participation could create skilled employment and encourage private-sector investment.<\/p>\n

Salako also called for stronger collaboration among health institutions, universities, technical colleges, technology companies, manufacturers and rehabilitation providers.<\/p>\n

He stressed that the sustainability of the initiative would depend on deliberate coordination, reliable supply chains for components and consumables, strict safety and quality standards, as well as affordability and accessibility.<\/p>\n

The minister also called for the involvement of persons with disabilities and their representative organisations in the development and improvement of rehabilitation services.<\/p>\n

He said their lived experiences should inform how the technology is introduced, how services are organised and how the success of the programme is assessed.<\/p>\n

Salako said the Federal Government had developed a National Policy and Strategic Plan for Rehabilitation and Assistive Technology<\/strong> to provide a framework for coordinated action, stronger rehabilitation services and improved access to assistive technology.<\/p>\n

He urged stakeholders to translate the policy into practical implementation through clear responsibilities, effective partnerships, trained personnel, appropriate infrastructure and sustainable financing.<\/p>\n

The minister disclosed that the Federal Government had also made budgetary provision for the establishment of a state-of-the-art centre at the MRTB to facilitate training in the 3D technology.<\/p>\n

He said the investment demonstrated the government\u2019s commitment to sustaining and building on the progress achieved through the project.<\/p>\n

Salako stressed that the initiative should not be regarded as a one-off demonstration but as part of a broader effort to strengthen rehabilitation services and expand access to quality healthcare technologies.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo single institution can achieve these goals alone. We must sustain this spirit of partnership after today\u2019s showcase,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He formally declared open the 3D-Printed Prosthetics Technology Showcase and urged stakeholders to share knowledge, identify practical lessons and explore responsible ways of expanding the technology to more Nigerians requiring rehabilitation and assistive devices.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
