That summit is when they would have solidified the ‘one’ candidate arrangement. They allowed their individual ambitions to becloud the common purpose,” Ejeye said.

Atiku’s continued presidential ambition has also come under criticism, with some arguing that his determination to contest again could complicate efforts to build a broad-based opposition coalition.

Segun Sowunmi, a political commentator and former spokesman for Atiku, criticised the former vice-president’s repeated presidential bids, arguing that his ambition had hindered the emergence of younger political leaders, particularly in northern Nigeria.

“Atiku ought to have bowed out by now. He can’t even get the votes he got before,” the caller said.

TVC Director of News, Babajide Otitoju, has expressed a similar view, arguing that Obi’s electoral performance in Lagos in 2023 was aided by disaffection within the APC, with aggrieved party members allegedly working against their party’s interests.

Otitoju also criticised some of Obi’s supporters, popularly known as Obidients, describing them as rude and toxic and arguing that their conduct had made them difficult for the former Anambra governor to control.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa has also been associated with criticism of Obi’s supporters.

Obi’s political consistency has come under further scrutiny following renewed attention to his past statements about the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), the party under which he served as governor of Anambra State.

Critics have cited reports of his previous declaration that he would not leave APGA, alongside subsequent disagreements over the interpretation of his position.

The Anambra State Government released a video showing Obi at a political rally vowing not to leave the party that brought him to power.

Reacting to the footage, Arise Television presenter Reuben Abati expressed surprise that the video existed and cautioned politicians to be careful about their public statements, noting that material published online could remain accessible long after it was made.

Obi’s supporters, however, continue to regard him as a formidable opposition figure capable of winning the presidency. His critics counter that divisions within the opposition and disagreements over strategy could weaken his chances in 2027.

Abuja-based lawyer and human rights activist Deji Adeyanju offered a more definitive assessment of the emerging contest, arguing that the main presidential battle would be between Atiku and Tinubu.

According to Adeyanju, Obi and other opposition candidates could inadvertently improve Tinubu’s chances of re-election if they contest separately rather than rally behind a single candidate.

Meanwhile, veteran journalist Amaechi Anakwe has urged advocates of opposition unity to look beyond the presidential aspirants and enlist the support of influential political elders who could persuade them to reconsider their individual ambitions.

He identified former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former military president Ibrahim Babangida and retired General Theophilus Danjuma as prominent elder statesmen whose intervention could help resolve the differences among the aspirants.

Anakwe argued that their involvement could persuade the candidates to agree on a single contender capable of mounting a formidable challenge to Tinubu.

According to him, engaging influential elders could prove more effective than concentrating exclusively on negotiations among the presidential aspirants.

The arguments reflect growing scepticism among some commentators about whether the ongoing consultations will produce a workable electoral alliance before the 2027 polls.

Those who believe the opposition’s divisions are too deep to overcome fear that the pattern of the 2023 presidential election could be repeated, with opposition votes split among competing candidates and the ruling party benefiting from the division.

In 2023, Tinubu won the presidency in a contest in which Atiku, Obi and other candidates ran separately. The prospect of another fragmented opposition field has therefore become a central concern in discussions about the next election.

Nevertheless, the ongoing consultations suggest that opposition leaders have not abandoned the search for common ground.

The coalition said further engagements would build on the resolutions of the G100 Opposition Summit and that Nigerians would be informed of substantive decisions and agreed next steps as discussions progressed.

It did not disclose whether the meetings had produced an agreement on a joint presidential candidate or any other specific electoral arrangement.

Whether the consultations can overcome the competing ambitions of the major opposition figures remains uncertain. Their ability to reach a common position could determine whether they mount a coordinated challenge to Tinubu or enter the 2027 general elections divided.

By Oscar Okhifo Opposition leaders have renewed consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections, but competing presidential ambitions, disagreements over power-sharing and the absence of a consensus candidate continue to…

[5

post-130036","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.7 -
