{"id":130058,"date":"2026-10-16T06:08:36","date_gmt":"2026-10-16T05:08:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=130058"},"modified":"2026-10-16T06:08:36","modified_gmt":"2026-10-16T05:08:36","slug":"senate-orders-nationwide-probe-into-nysc-camp-clinics-after-corps-members-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/senate-orders-nationwide-probe-into-nysc-camp-clinics-after-corps-members-death\/","title":{"rendered":"Senate Orders Nationwide Probe Into NYSC Camp Clinics After Corps Member\u2019s Death"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m#msg-f:1879143650499063531\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div id=\"m#msg-f:1879143650499063531-header\" class=\"mail-message-header spacer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>By Lizzy Chirkpi<\/strong><\/div>\n<div id=\"m#msg-f:1879143650499063531-content\" class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \">\n<div class=\"clear\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Senate has ordered a nationwide investigation into the death of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Etimbuk Daniel, at the orientation camp in Enugu State, raising concerns about the adequacy of medical facilities and emergency response services in camps across the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The resolution was adopted on Thursday, October 15, 2026, following a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Senator Aniekan Bassey (Akwa Ibom North-East), who called for an urgent review of healthcare services available to corps members during their mandatory national service.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bassey lamented Daniel\u2019s death, describing him as \u201ca vibrant, patriotic young Nigerian and a shining light of his community who had only set out to serve the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He warned that the incident had exposed potential gaps in the medical care provided to corps members at orientation camps.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe incident is not isolated, but highlights a recurring pattern of systemic negligence, poor medical infrastructure, and absence of qualified emergency personnel and rapid referral protocols across NYSC camps, underlining that the government owes a duty of care to young graduates mobilized away from their homes to serve the nation,\u201d the senator said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Senate mandated its Committees on Police Affairs; Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters; Ethics, Code of Conduct and Public Petitions; Youth Development; and Health to conduct the investigation in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The probe is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding Daniel\u2019s death and determine whether any lapses in medical care or delays in emergency response contributed to the tragedy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Daniel, the immediate past president of the Students\u2019 Union Government of Akwa Ibom State University, reportedly developed complications after complaining of a headache at the orientation camp.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His death has triggered concerns among students and other stakeholders about the safety of corps members and the capacity of camp clinics to manage medical emergencies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) had earlier raised questions about the medication allegedly administered to Daniel and the reported delay in transferring him to a hospital.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">NANS President, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, alleged that Daniel later requested hospital treatment but that approval for his transfer came too late.
