A 40-year-old Nigerian, Chukwuemeka Victor Amachukwu, has been sentenced to eight years in prison in the United States for his involvement in hacking, identity theft and fraud schemes involving millions of dollars.<\/p>\n

Amachukwu, who also operated under the aliases Chukwuemeka Victor Eletuo and So Kwan Leung, was sentenced by US District Judge Paul G. Gardephe after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit computer intrusions and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.<\/p>\n

The United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Jamie McDonald, announced the sentence on Monday, October 19, 2026, according to a statement published by the US Department of Justice.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmachukwu believed he was operating safely offshore when he targeted his victims, but he has now been held to account and now faces a serious sentence for his crimes,\u201d McDonald said.<\/p>\n

He said Amachukwu participated in sophisticated schemes targeting US businesses, stealing personal information and exploiting victims’ identities to perpetrate fraud.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese crimes imposed significant harm on the victims and the public, and so it is only appropriate that the crimes also come with a significant sentence for the defendant,\u201d the US attorney said.<\/p>\n

According to court filings and statements made in court, Amachukwu, his co-conspirator, Kingsley Uchelue Utulu, and other accomplices based in Nigeria began hacking US tax preparation businesses in or around 2019.<\/p>\n

The group allegedly used spear-phishing emails to gain unauthorised access to the electronic systems of the targeted businesses, stealing tax records and other identifying information belonging to approximately 800 customers.<\/p>\n

The affected tax preparation firms were located in New York, Texas and other parts of the United States.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors said the conspirators subsequently used stolen personal information belonging to thousands of individuals to file fraudulent tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and state tax authorities.<\/p>\n

They sought fraudulent tax refunds totalling approximately $8.4m but successfully obtained at least $2.5m.<\/p>\n

The group also exploited stolen identities to submit fraudulent applications under the Small Business Administration’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan programme, obtaining an additional $819,000 in illicit payouts, according to the Department of Justice.<\/p>\n

Amachukwu was also involved in a separate investment fraud scheme in which he offered victims in the United States purportedly valuable standby letters of credit.<\/p>\n

Investigators said he impersonated a wealthy overseas financier to persuade prospective investors that the financial instruments were genuine and that the proposed investments were legitimate.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors, however, established that the purported investments did not exist. Amachukwu and his accomplices reportedly collected more than $7m through the scheme.<\/p>\n

In addition to the eight-year prison term, Amachukwu was ordered to serve one year of supervised release after completing his sentence.<\/p>\n

The court also ordered him to pay restitution of $3,647,629.39 and forfeit $10,846,634.39.<\/p>\n

The US Attorney’s Office credited the Federal Bureau of Investigation with assisting in the investigation. The case was handled by the office’s Complex Frauds and Cybercrime Unit, with Assistant US Attorney Daniel G. Nessim leading the prosecution.<\/p>\n

The conviction highlights the reputational challenges Nigeria faces when citizens abroad become involved in high-profile criminal cases, particularly those involving cybercrime, identity theft and financial fraud.<\/p>\n

Although the actions of individuals should not be used to judge an entire nationality, such cases can reinforce negative perceptions of Nigerians overseas and overshadow the legitimate contributions of millions of citizens living and working in other countries.<\/p>\n

Nigerians in the diaspora should recognise that their conduct can influence how their host countries perceive them and, by extension, their country of origin. In this sense, they serve as informal ambassadors of Nigeria and have a responsibility to uphold the law and demonstrate integrity in their personal and professional dealings.<\/p>\n

Living abroad offers opportunities for personal growth, career advancement and economic prosperity, but it also requires respect for the laws and institutions of the host country.<\/p>\n

Nigerians should pursue these opportunities through honesty, professionalism, hard work and responsible citizenship rather than engage in activities that could lead to criminal prosecution and imprisonment.<\/p>\n

At the same time, individual criminal responsibility must remain distinct from the character of the wider Nigerian community abroad. The misconduct of a few should not become a basis for discrimination against law-abiding Nigerians who contribute meaningfully to their host societies.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, protecting Nigeria’s image overseas requires a commitment to lawful conduct and personal accountability. Nigerians who distinguish themselves through integrity and positive contributions can help challenge damaging stereotypes and demonstrate that the actions of a few do not define an entire nation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
