The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has clarified that he carried a placard during the second-term administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, not during the administration of his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan.<\/p>\n

Images circulating on social media show Adeboye, dressed in a white shirt and holding a placard, purportedly participating in a protest against government policies. Some commentators had claimed that the photograph was taken during the administration of Jonathan.<\/p>\n

The images were subsequently used by some social media users to accuse the cleric of hypocrisy, alleging that he spoke out against Jonathan’s government but had remained silent over the policies of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.<\/p>\n

However, speaking during the RCCG’s special thanksgiving service for November, Adeboye explained that the event was a prayer walk organised in compliance with a directive from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), not a protest march.<\/p>\n

He said the exercise took place in 2020, during Buhari’s second term, five years after Jonathan left office in 2015.<\/p>\n

Preaching on the theme, “Activating Your Potential”, the cleric also dedicated the service to praying for social media influencers, content creators and other professionals in the creative industry.<\/p>\n

Recounting how he reacted when he was told that the circulating photograph showed him protesting against Jonathan, Adeboye said: “When I heard it, I said, ‘I carried placard against Jonathan?’ They said, ‘Yes, we have the picture.’ I said it wasn’t a protest; it was a prayer walk.<\/p>\n

“The CAN chairman said all churches should do the prayer walk near their churches, and that was what I did near Ebute Metta.<\/p>\n

“I carried a placard in 2020. Jonathan ceased to be President in 2015. I carried a placard five years after Jonathan, in the second term of Buhari. But a journalist twisted it and said I did what I did in 2015, and everybody swallowed it.”<\/p>\n

He challenged journalists and other content creators to verify information before publishing or sharing it, recalling that he was introduced to the principles of investigative journalism during one of his elective courses at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.<\/p>\n

Adeboye said he had been taught that things were not always as they appeared, stressing the need for journalists to investigate claims rather than rely on assumptions.<\/p>\n

The cleric also addressed the controversy surrounding his comments on the kidnapped Oriire children, saying his remarks during a visit abroad had been misrepresented to suggest that he was defending the Tinubu administration.<\/p>\n

He explained that he had spoken about the children’s abduction and expressed his belief that none of them would die, following an earlier speaker’s suggestion that nothing was being done to secure their release.<\/p>\n

According to him, his comments on the responsibility of the Nigerian President as Commander-in-Chief were selectively reported, leaving out other parts of his address.<\/p>\n

Adeboye said: “When Trump wanted to bomb us, he merely told his commanders, soldiers and officers, ‘Go and bomb Nigeria.’ As soon as he said that, he went to sleep. He has done all that is required of him.<\/p>\n

“I said our President had told his officers, ‘Go and get these children out.’ I said once Trump finished giving his order, he went to bed. I said, don’t blame my President; he has already given instructions to his soldiers. He should also be allowed, like Trump, to go to bed. He has done all that is required of the Commander-in-Chief.”<\/p>\n

He accused some media practitioners of taking portions of his 30-minute address out of context and presenting them as though they represented the entirety of his remarks.<\/p>\n

“Somebody took what I said in less than five minutes, as if it were the whole speech, and said, ‘Pastor Adeboye said the President has done his best,’ and you all swallowed it. Every other thing I said there, that is not news,” he said.<\/p>\n

The RCCG leader further recalled that he had thanked United States President Donald Trump for offering assistance to Nigeria but also urged him to do more to address the country’s security challenges.<\/p>\n

He said he had specifically appealed to Trump not to bomb Nigeria and instead assist the country in tackling those sponsoring terrorism.<\/p>\n

“When I said, ‘Oga, President of America, thank you o, you have helped us, but you have not done enough. We still need help, but don’t bomb us anymore,’ that is not news. They don’t want Nigeria to hear that.<\/p>\n

“If you want to help us, help us take care of those who are sponsoring terrorists. It is not news. Don’t write that one. And you all swallowed it. God have mercy on journalists,” Adeboye said.<\/p>\n
