Senator Ned Nwoko has warned bloggers and social media commentators against spreading what he described as false and damaging allegations about his estranged wife, Nollywood actress Regina Daniels, following widespread speculation about her health after she appeared in a wheelchair during her 25th birthday celebration.

Daniels had raised public concern after sharing a birthday video in which she was seen in a wheelchair and appealed to Nigerians to pray for her, prompting questions about her health and condition.

However, expressions of concern soon gave way to a wave of speculation and allegations, with some bloggers linking her condition to alleged infidelity and claims about her private associations.

Some social media commentators alleged that the actress had been unfaithful to her senator husband, while others claimed that a women’s cult she was allegedly initiated into had inflicted severe consequences on her after she strayed.

The claims were widely circulated, with some social media personalities presenting them as explanations for her inability to walk without providing verifiable evidence.

This correspondent contacted some of the bloggers circulating the allegations to establish whether they could substantiate their claims should Daniels decide to pursue legal action against them. Rather than provide evidence, some responded with insults.

Controversial social media personality Kemi Olunloyo also weighed in on the controversy, alleging that Daniels’ condition was linked to hard drug consumption and describing her as a chronic drug abuser.

Olunloyo further claimed that Nwoko had grown weary of raising concerns about the actress’s alleged drug abuse and had given up on her before the breakdown of their marriage.

However, none of the allegations linking Daniels’ health condition to infidelity, alleged cult activities or drug abuse has been independently substantiated.

Against this backdrop, Nwoko has appealed to the public, particularly Daniels’ fans, friends, bloggers and social media commentators, to give the actress some breathing space and allow her to concentrate on her recovery.

In separate posts on his official X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram accounts, the senator expressed concern over fabricated death announcements, misleading reports and hurtful publications about the actress.

“I want to make a sincere appeal to the public, particularly Regina’s fans, friends, bloggers and social media commentators, to please give Regina some breathing space,” he said.

Nwoko said Daniels had endured considerable difficulties and needed love, support and an opportunity to recover rather than further public criticism.

“Regina has been through a lot, more than many people may realise, and right now, what she needs most is love, support and the opportunity to recover.”

He also expressed concern about the emotional toll of the publications on Daniels and their children, noting that the actress was aware of many of the reports being circulated about her.

“These things are not harmless social media engagement. Regina sees many of these posts, and they are deeply distressing. They do nothing to support her recovery, rather, they add to the burden she is already carrying,” he said.

The senator urged her supporters to discourage the circulation of such reports rather than amplify them.

He also cautioned bloggers and other social media users against deliberately publishing false information about Daniels, particularly claims concerning her death, health and personal circumstances.

“We are documenting these publications, and anyone found responsible will be held accountable through the appropriate legal channels,” he said.

Nwoko maintained that Daniels deserved the opportunity to recover without being subjected to fabricated reports and renewed public scrutiny.

The controversy has also brought renewed attention to the growing problem of misinformation and unverified allegations on social media, where claims involving public figures are sometimes circulated as established facts without efforts to establish their authenticity or obtain responses from those concerned.

It has also reignited debate over the need for greater accountability on social media platforms, with some Nigerians arguing that the platforms should do more to curb misinformation and hold users responsible for publications capable of damaging reputations and causing harm.

However, calls for tighter regulation have raised concerns about how to tackle misinformation without undermining freedom of expression, legitimate public scrutiny and citizens’ right to hold public figures accountable.

For critics of the growing culture of online speculation, the controversy surrounding Daniels highlights the human cost of allowing unverified allegations to circulate unchecked, particularly when they concern an individual’s health and private life.
