The Deputy President of the Senate and Chairman Senate Committee on the Review of 1999 Constitution, Senator Ike Ekweremadu has assured that the constitution amendment exercise would help deepen the nation\u2019s democracy and strengthen her federalism.<\/p>\n
This was even as he congratulated President Goodluck Jonathan on his successful attainment of two years in office.<\/p>\n
In a goodwill message to Nigerians on the occasion of 2013 Democracy Day, the Deputy President of the Senate who described Nigeria\u2019s 14 years of uninterrupted democracy as \u201cchallenging, but historic and rewarding\u201d, noted that democracy was not an event, but a process that would continue to mature over time through collective efforts and determination of the citizens.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cWhile we may not be where we want to be in our democratic experience, it is good news that we are certainly not where we used to be before May 29, 1999.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have made progress, especially in the areas of freedom, electoral processes, and the independence of federal legislature; and I have no doubt that the current constitution review exercise will help deepen our democracy and strengthen the nation\u2019s federal system.\u201d<\/p>\n
Senator Ekweremadu assured that the Committee would submit a Bill containing the suggested amendments to the Senate in plenary very soon.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, in a goodwill message to the President Goodluck Jonathan on his two years as Nigeria\u2019s elected President, the Deputy President of the Senate commended the President for his resolve to lead Nigeria on the part of an all round rejuvenation through the Transformation Agenda despite daunting challenges.<\/p>\n
\u201cDemanding times as these take a toll on leaders mentally and physically, but it is also at such times that great men endeavor to etch their names in gold\u201d, he observed.<\/p>\n
