Delta State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan has advocated for the incorporation of environmental issues into the nation\u2019s school curriculum so as to create environmental consciousness in the younger generation.<\/p>\n
Dr. Uduaghan who made this call Thursday while commissioning the Nelson Mandela Garden of 95 Trees in Asaba said it was very important for the younger generation to be sensitized on the dangers of environmental degradation especially climate change and how to preserve the environment for a greener economy at a young age .<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen our children are taught at a young age the effects of environmental degradation and their roles in preserving their environment, they will become advocates for environmental preservation and regeneration. Our children need to know the dangers of their actions and inactions on the environment especially on climate change,\u201d Governor Uduaghan said.<\/p>\n
Dr. Uduaghan commended the Nelson Mandela family for their contributions towards the citing of the Mandela Garden in Delta State saying \u201cWe are highly honoured that a monument of this magnitude is being done for Nelson Mandela in this state. Indeed we are honoured.\u201d<\/p>\n
He also commended the wife of Ogun State Governor, Mrs. Olufunsho Amosun for her advocacy in the fight against environmental degradation in schools.<\/p>\n
In an opening remarks, Chief Newton Jibunor, an international environmentalist and initiator of the project explained that the garden was created to honour Nelson Mandela\u2019s selfless service to mankind. He commended Governor Uduaghan for the assistance and support in making the vision a reality.<\/p>\n
Also speaking, Mr. Ndaba Mandela, Founder of Africa Rising Foundation and Grandson of Nelson Mandela stated that the garden was a representation of his grandfather\u2019s vision of a greener Africa explaining that it would serve as an inspiration for the younger generation to continue to fight against environmental degradation.<\/p>\n
Various speakers who spoke including the South African Consul-General, Amb. Mokgethi Monaisa, Wife of Ogun State Governor, Mrs. Olufunsho Amosun, Mrs. Grace Bent, Philip Asiodu, President, Nigerian Conservation Foundation, and General T.Y. Danjuma (rtd.) commended the initiative to celebrate Nelson Mandela\u2019s ninety-five years of selfless service to the world saying that the garden was a good starting point in the fight against environmental degradation.<\/p>\n
Highpoint of the celebration was the unveiling of the Nelson Mandela statue by the Governor, Nelson Mandela\u2019s family and Dr. Newton Jibunor.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has called for co-operation among countries in the fight against environmental degradation in the world.<\/p>\n
The Governor who made the Thursday in Asaba during a courtesy visit by the Consul-General of South Africa, Ambassador Mokgethi Monaisa stated that \u201csince government at national levels have disappointed the world by failing to reach agreements in effective tackling environmental degradation and regeneration, sub-national government have taken the initiative to ensure that our environment was pollution free. They have formed the R20 to tackle the effects of environmental degradation especially climate change and ensure that pollution do not destroy our communities\u201d.<\/p>\n
While reiterating the state environmental challenges Dr. Uduaghan said that government was committed to tackle the environmental degradation in the state and called for support from the International Community in this regard.<\/p>\n
He opined that the Mandela Garden of 95 Trees was an important project to the state as \u201cit will enable the state draw attention to the environmental degradation in the state and its needs in regenerating the environment\u201d<\/p>\n
While commending South Africa government for the existing relationship between the state and South-Africa in the health and education sector, the governor stated that \u201cthe state is ready for more partnership with the South African government in other economic sectors\u201d emphasising that \u201cthe twinning programme with Mulanga City and South African State Oil Company will be beneficial to the state as their experience in handling environmental issues associated with oil production will help the state in tackling its own environmental pollution\u201d<\/p>\n
Dr. Uduaghan also disclosed that the State would soon enter into a partnership agreement with a South African firm to manage the laboratory at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital, Oghara to make it more efficient.<\/p>\n
In a brief response, the South-African Consul-General, Ambassador Mokgethi Monaisa said the team was in the State to commission the Mandela Garden of 95 Trees in Asaba and strengthen the ties between the state and country.<\/p>\n
He commended Delta State Government for the honour done to the renowned icon and former South-Africa President Nelson Mandela explaining that the citing of the Nelson Mandela Garden in Asaba was a clear indication that the \u201cstate is peaceful and committed to environmental preservation.\u201d<\/p>\n
He observed that Delta State has the same ideas and potentials with Mulanga city that has oil and houses the biggest oil company in South-Africa adding that it would be nice for the state to partner with the city in-order to improve on the environmental potentials of the state.<\/p>\n
