The Imo State Government has refuted reports that unnecessary deductions were being made on the salaries of civil servants especially the teachers.<\/p>\n
Addressing journalists in Oweri, the Imo State Accountant-General, Sir George Eche said his office makes regular and timely issuance of cheques to workers and cannot make deductions on such cheques.<\/p>\n
Eche explained that teachers salaries are pay-rolled at the state Universal Basic Education Board [SUBEB] and the Secondary Education Management Board [SEMB] for primary and secondary school teachers respectively.<\/p>\n
He explained that deductions made are those approved and some of those inherited before we took over this function from SUBEB and SEMB.<\/p>\n
Eche stated that his office investigated into the matter and discovered that some teachers were involved in the willful acquisition of capital assets, loans from financial institutions and other commitments which they settle instalmentally from their salaries.<\/p>\n
The Accountant General warned that to forestall such occurrences in the future, all existing contracts made by teachers must be clearly stated and presented to his office for approval and the concerned teachers well briefed.<\/p>\n
He noted that this will save the workers from financial embarrassment resulting from burdensome deductions and will also save government from false accusations.<\/p>\n
Eche called on any teacher who may be affected by any form of unnecessary deductions from salaries to report to his office for further corrective measures.<\/p>\n
