{"id":18542,"date":"2013-10-24T22:41:27","date_gmt":"2013-10-24T21:41:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=18542"},"modified":"2013-10-24T22:41:27","modified_gmt":"2013-10-24T21:41:27","slug":"n26-5bn-oil-spill-fundeket-community-shuts-down-exxonmobil-operations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/n26-5bn-oil-spill-fundeket-community-shuts-down-exxonmobil-operations\/","title":{"rendered":"*N26.5bn Oil Spill Fund:Eket Community Shuts Down ExxonMobil Operations*"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Operations at ExxonMobil in Eket, Akwa Ibom State have come to an abrupt<br \/>\nhalt, as agitating people of Eket Communities took to the streets on<br \/>\nThursday to say enough is enough.<\/p>\n<p>The mass protest which was staged simultaneously around Mobil facilities<br \/>\nnamely the Airstrip in Eket, Mobil Terminal in Ibeno and Mobil Housing<br \/>\nEstate in Eket, saw placard carrying indigenes of Eket Federal Constituency<br \/>\ncrying for the full payments of N26.5bn oil spill compensation to the four<br \/>\noil producing local governments as previously proposed by the Oil Firm.<\/p>\n<p>The communities lamented that Mobil was insensitive to their plight, as<br \/>\nevident by her refusal to pay the compensation for the 2012 oil spill<br \/>\nincident that they claim resulted in the discharge of more than 300 barrels<br \/>\nof crude oil into the aquatic environment of the four oil producing areas.<\/p>\n<p>Our correspondent in Eket reports that during the protest march some<br \/>\nprominent youth leaders under the aegis of Eket Federal Constituency<br \/>\nVanguard led by Mr Isaiah Abia and Mr William Mkpa, all condemned Exxon<br \/>\nMobil for being insensitive to the plight of her host communities.<\/p>\n<p>He said the lack of employment opportunities for the people of the<br \/>\ncommunity, the deplorable condition of social infrastructure in the host<br \/>\ncommunities, and other hazards resulting from the exploitation by the oil<br \/>\nfirm, attest to the poor attitude of the\u00a0 oil giants to her landlords.<\/p>\n<p>He warned that failure of Mobil to address this ugly trend will leave them<br \/>\nwith no option than to put finality on their operation in their land.<\/p>\n<p>They also called for the immediate redeployment of the Managing Director of<br \/>\nExxon Mobil Mr Mark Ward over his persistent snub of all the overtures from<br \/>\nthe communities.<\/p>\n<p>At the Mobil airstrip in Eket, plantain suckers where planted at the gates<br \/>\nwhile the youth locked the gate with padlock in the full glare of a police<br \/>\ndetachment who watched to prevent a degeneration of the crises.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the protest at Mobil Terminal, Ibeno Mr Isaiah Abia said there<br \/>\nwas no going back in calling Mobil to order. He said the protest march came<br \/>\nat the expiration of the 7-day ultimatum earlier issued to the authorities<br \/>\nof Mobil last week.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the people of the areas where totally against the notion that<br \/>\nExxonMobil wanted to use the oil spill compensation fund to execute<br \/>\nprojects in the communities, maintaining that such a notion was an<br \/>\nattestation to the nonchalant attitude of Mobil.<\/p>\n<p>It will be recalled that the Eket communities had urged the multinational<br \/>\noil firm not to dare the community any further, but to fulfill her<br \/>\nobligation of paying N26.5bn to make for the damages caused by \u201cthe 300<br \/>\nbarrels of crude oil spillage of November, 2012\u201d which resulted in mayhem<br \/>\non the economic lives of the coastal communities.<\/p>\n<p>The protesters who chanted with placards and trumpets barricaded the oil<br \/>\ncompany\u2019s either access gates, while a coffin with the inscription \u201cRIP<br \/>\nMark Ward\u201d was kept at the gates of Mobil Terminal in Ibeno, amidst other<br \/>\nbanners and placards.<\/p>\n<p>Also seen at one of the deserted gates of the Mobil Terminal was a canoe,<br \/>\nwrapped with traditional palm leaves and a white fowl, which the Ibeno<br \/>\nprotesters claimed found itself to the gate of the terminal from the river<br \/>\non its own, and dared authorities of the oil firm to remove the canoe if<br \/>\nthey had the guts.<\/p>\n<p>They also blamed the oil producing firm for the abduction of the paramount<br \/>\nruler of Esit Eket, Chief Ubong Peter Assam, and issued her with an<br \/>\nultimatum to produce the monarch or risk incurring the wrath of the<br \/>\ncommunities.<\/p>\n<p>At the Mobil Housing Estate,in Eket, a youth leader from Eket Godwin<br \/>\nNduaesah said the youths were ready to spend the remaining days of the year<br \/>\nat the Mobil facilities, until the rights of the communities are met by<br \/>\nMobil.<\/p>\n<p>According to them, nothing will restrain them from obstructing any normalcy<br \/>\nat the operational base of the oil company, adding that should they be<br \/>\nignored, then no option other than a change of gear and more stringent<br \/>\nactions will be carried out to show the seriousness of the communities.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the protesters, an assistant commissioner of Police in the State<br \/>\nGabriel Ashong\u00a0 advised the youths and women to desist from violent conduct<br \/>\nbut to give time for dialogue as it was the best tool in conflict<br \/>\nresolution.<\/p>\n<p>This massive protest comes after the paramount rulers of the four local<br \/>\ngovernments had on 25th September condemned and rejected an overture of<br \/>\nN2.6 bn offered by the oil giants, maintaining that it was grossly<br \/>\ninadequate for the quantum of loss experienced by the community.<\/p>\n<p>Another communiqu\u00e9 dated 16th October 2013, and signed by representatives<br \/>\nfrom the four oil bearing communities namely Isaiah Abia(Esit Eket),<br \/>\nWilliam Mkpa(Ibeno), Ime Utin(Onna) and Udo Bassey(Eket) had \u201ccondemned in<br \/>\nstrong terms several lies, insults, abuses and total disregard by Mobil<br \/>\nProducing Nigeria Unlimited of the agreements reached at the intervention<br \/>\nmeetings held by Gov.
