{"id":19101,"date":"2013-11-07T17:45:31","date_gmt":"2013-11-07T16:45:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=19101"},"modified":"2013-11-07T17:45:31","modified_gmt":"2013-11-07T16:45:31","slug":"victims-of-boko-haram-deserve-compensation-as-of-right-serap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/victims-of-boko-haram-deserve-compensation-as-of-right-serap\/","title":{"rendered":"Victims Of Boko Haram Deserve Compensation As Of Right   -SERAP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nSocio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has issued \u201can Urgent Appeal to President Goodluck Jonathan urging him to \u201creverse the recently announced policy of zero compensation for victims of Boko Haram attacks.\u201d<br \/>\nThe group said that the government should \u201cwithin 14 days of the publication of this appeal announce compensation and reparation policies for victims of attacks by Boko Haram, and begin a process of establishing mechanisms for the effective and transparent implementation of such policies.\u201d The group in the Urgent Appeal dated 7 November 2013 and signed by its executive director Adetokunbo Mumuni threatened to take \u201call necessary legal actions nationally and internationally to compel the government to fulfil its international human rights obligations and commitments,\u201d if the\u00a0 does not comply with its appeal.<br \/>\nThe group said that, \u201cIn the wake of the devastation by Boko Haram, compensation and reparation programmes are absolutely essential to deliver justice to the victims of human rights abuses precipitated by the group. Paying compensation and reparation to victims of human rights abuses by Boko Haram is a matter of rights and not charity.
