Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM), a pressure group within the Peoples
\nDemocratic Party (PDP) and the nation\u2019s political space, has called on the
\nIndependent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reconsider the
\nregistration of PDM as a party.
\nThe Movement under the chairmanship of Senator Abubakar Mahdi rose from a
\nmeeting of its founding fathers and Elders\u2019 Committee in Abuja Wednesday
\nwith a communiqu\u00e9 demanding INEC to act in accordance with its call for
\nthe purpose of withdrawing the registration of PDM which it (INEC) granted
\nregistration as a party about three months ago.
\nSome members of the Movement, under the interim chairmanship of Malam
\nBashir Ibrahim Yusuf, had secretly filed papers with the INEC for the
\ntransformation of the Movement into a political party, which the electoral
\nbody approved.
\nBut the Mahdi-led PDM, which said Yusuf and his collaborators acted
\nclandestinely without consultation and due process, has continued to
\ninsist that the Movement remains a pressure group in the PDP and the
\nnation\u2019s political space.
\nAfter the meeting of the founding fathers and members of the Elders\u2019
\nCommittee for several hours at the Shehu Musa Yar\u2019Adua Centre in Abuja on
\nWednesday, the Movement resolved to concur with the views expressed by
\nZonal Coordinators and State Working Committees representing 28 states of
\nthe Federation that \u201crejected the registration of PDM as a political party
\nwithout consultation and due process, and calls on INEC to reconsider the
\nregistration of PDM as a party for the purpose of withdrawing the
\nregistration.\u201d
\nThe Movement, according to the two page communiqu\u00e9, signed by the Chairman
\nof the meeting, Dr Farouk Abdulazeez, reviewed the current impasse in the
\nPDP and appreciated efforts of President Goodluck Jonathan and the Party
\nLeadership in ensuring a speedy resolution and reconciliation of the
\nissues involved.
\nThe communiqu\u00e9 quoted the Movement to have resolved at the meeting to
\nmaintain its status as a pressure group within PDP and deploy it in
\nsupport of all PDP candidates in all future elections at all levels.
\nThe Movement noted and appreciated all its members who have kept faith
\nwith its original mission and vision.
\nAccording to the communiqu\u00e9, \u201cThe meeting was well attended by a cross
\nsection of founding fathers and leaders including, among others, Dr Farouk
\nAbdualzeez, Chief Tony Anenih, Chief Chris Agbobu, Senator Hamisu Musa,
\nSenator Abubakar Mahdi, Engineer Afam Nwana, Hon. Dubem Onyia, Alhaji
\nMurtala Shehu Musa Yar Adua, Alhaji Bala Hadith and Senator Ifeanyi
\nAraraume.
\n\u201cThe meeting remembered and observed a minute silence in memory of some
\ndeparted founding fathers and members of the PDM; those remembered for
\ntheir invaluable contributions are: General Shehu Musa Yar\u2019Adua (Tafidan
\nKatsina), Alhaji M.S. Buhari, Mrs Maria Ekeh, Alhaji Haruna Elewi,
\nAmbassador Bidmus, President Umaru Musa Yar\u2019Adua, Alhaji Ibrahim Shehu
\nKwatalo, Chief John Okpa, Senator Polycarp Nwite, Senator Paul Ukpo, Mrs
\nWyte, Barrister Chinedu, Alhaji Abubakar Koko, Senator Chuba Okadigbo,
\nAlhaji Ismaila, Alhaji Iro Dan Musa, Mr Dan Etukudo, Chief Ojo Fadumila,
