{"id":19806,"date":"2013-11-21T17:19:19","date_gmt":"2013-11-21T16:19:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=19806"},"modified":"2013-11-21T17:40:23","modified_gmt":"2013-11-21T16:40:23","slug":"lawyers-oppose-bill-to-allow-public-officers-own-foreign-bank-accounts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/lawyers-oppose-bill-to-allow-public-officers-own-foreign-bank-accounts\/","title":{"rendered":"Lawyers Oppose Bill To Allow Public Officers Own Foreign Bank Accounts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 12.727272033691406px; line-height: 15.454545021057129px;\">Lagos \u2013 Some prominent lawyers in Lagos on Thursday kicked against a bill seeking to allow public officers operate foreign bank accounts.<\/span><br style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 12.727272033691406px; line-height: 15.454545021057129px;\" \/><br style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 12.727272033691406px; line-height: 15.454545021057129px;\" \/><span style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 12.727272033691406px; line-height: 15.454545021057129px;\">The lawyers, in separate interviews, said that it would further encourage corruption in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The bill on Wednesday passed the second reading at the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n<p>Under the extant Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act, 2004, it is criminal for a public officer to operate a bank account outside Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>The bill seeks to amend the law \u201cso as to make the leave of the Bureau necessary for a public officer to maintain or operate a bank account outside Nigeria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the bill, the Chairman, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja branch, Mr Onyekachi Ubani, said it would negate the fight against corruption.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis bill cannot be a good measure in fighting corruption.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome public officers will now be able to steal and stash the money in foreign accounts if it is passed into law,\u201d Ubani said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the lawmakers should focus on bills that were of benefit to ordinary Nigerians to justify the mandate given to them.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Adetokunbo Mumuni, Executive Director, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), said the bill contravened the Code of Conduct for Public Officers Act.<\/p>\n<p>Mumuni said:\u201dWhat the legislators have done is a direct encouragement for people looking for ways to loot our resources and stash them away in foreign countries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a retrogressive step and every well meaning Nigerian must condemn it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On his part, a human rights lawyer, Mr Bamidele Aturu, said it would send a wrong signal to the international community about the nation\u2019s seriousness in tackling corruption.<\/p>\n<p>Aturu said it would also weaken Nigerian banks because more money would now be transferred outside the country by public office holders.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lagos \u2013 Some prominent lawyers in Lagos on Thursday kicked against a bill seeking to allow public officers operate foreign bank accounts.The lawyers, in separate interviews, said that it would&hellip;<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":19807,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_lmt_disableupdate":"","_lmt_disable":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-19806","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.8 -
