{"id":20749,"date":"2013-12-12T18:56:02","date_gmt":"2013-12-12T17:56:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=20749"},"modified":"2013-12-12T18:56:02","modified_gmt":"2013-12-12T17:56:02","slug":"bangladesh-hangs-islamist-leader-abdul-kader-mullah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/bangladesh-hangs-islamist-leader-abdul-kader-mullah\/","title":{"rendered":"Bangladesh hangs Islamist leader Abdul Kader Mullah"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"introduction\" id=\"story_continues_1\">Bangladesh has executed the Islamist leader Abdul Kader Mullah, convicted of atrocities in the 1971 war of independence with Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>He is the first person convicted by Bangladesh&#8217;s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) to be executed.<\/p>\n<p>The ICT was set up in 2010 to investigate abuses committed during the 1971 conflict, in which some estimate three million people were killed.<\/p>\n<p>Mullah was a senior leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami party.<\/p>\n<p>His trial earlier in the year sparked protests from Jamaat supporters.<\/p>\n<p>Several other leading figures in the party have also been convicted by the tribunal.<\/p>\n<p>Mullah had been scheduled to be hanged on Tuesday, before gaining a reprieve pending a last-minute appeal against his death sentence.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/ac.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20750\" alt=\"ac\" src=\"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/ac.jpg\" width=\"750\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/ac.jpg 750w, https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/ac-300x160.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/ac-600x320.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some Bangladeshis took to the streets on Thursday demanding Mullah&#8217;s immediate execution<\/p>\n<p>The Bangladeshi Supreme Court dismissed the appeal earlier on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The 65-year-old was hanged inside Dhaka central jail at 22:01 local time (16:01 GMT) on Thursday evening.<\/p>\n<p>The BBC&#8217;s Mahfuz Sadique in Dhaka says security has been tightened in the capital and around the country, and there are reports from various towns of sporadic clashes between Jamaat-e-Islami supporters and security forces.<\/p>\n<p>Those being tried by the ICT are accused of collaborating with Pakistani forces who attempted to stop East Pakistan, as Bangladesh was then, from becoming an independent country.<\/p>\n<p>However, human rights groups have claimed that the tribunal falls short of international standards.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/ac1.jpg\" data-rel=\"penci-gallery-image-content\" ><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20751\" alt=\"ac\" src=\"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/ac1.jpg\" width=\"750\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/ac1.jpg 750w, https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/ac1-300x160.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/ac1-600x320.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bangladesh has executed the Islamist leader Abdul Kader Mullah, convicted of atrocities in the 1971 war of independence with Pakistan.
