\nSince it became obvious in 2010 that late President Umaru Musa Yar\u2019Adua
\nwas terminally ill in his Saudi Arabian bed, former President Olusegun
\nObasanjo had been Northern Nigeria\u2019s Public Enemy No. 1. He was not the
\nleast, largely seen as the devil incarnate who wittingly installed an
\nincurably ill Musa Yar\u2019Adua to extend southern Presidency in Abuja through
\nthe backdoor in breach of a sacrosanct \u2018Gentleman\u2019s Agreement\u2019. A barrage
\nof attacks was unleashed at the time, to underscore this fact and move a
\nstrategy forward, of curtailing the active and perceived importance of
\nPresident Obasanjo in shaping the destiny of post-Yar\u2019Aadua\u2019s Nigeria.
\nApart from public comments and overtures made by the former Governor of
\nthe Central Bank Adamu Ciroma \u2013 who became the face of Northern resistance
\nfor a while \u2013 the hitherto cautious and prominent backgrounder and smooth
\noperator Ibrahim Bademosi Babaginda (IBB), intensified his public outing.
\nIt should be noted that IBB is one rare Nigerian politician who grants
\nmedia interviews only very rarely. He would rather stay withdrawn and
\noperate from behind the scene than play the chatterbox. At the climax of
\none of his rare outings in this context, IBB had sought to embed in public
\nconsciousness, the reality that Nigerians now knew who fostered
\n\u201cmonumental corruption\u201d on the nation \u2013 a term that had always been
\nassociated with this renowned political stalwart with the gift of astute
\nstrategizing. His object of reference then was Olusegun Obasanjo who he
\naccused of having presided over huge national earnings and monumental
\nstealing surpassing the scale that he had personally been associated with.
\nIt was a vicious public relations battle that was launched deep into the
\nearly days of the Jonathan Presidency.
\nToday all that has changed. In part, Olusegun Obasanjo has become a
\ncentral think-tank institution working in tandem with a section of the
\nself-styled Northern elders seeking to find a solution to the present
\nimpasse and volatile state that Nigeria\u2019s current political architecture
\nas designed by President Goodluck Jonathan portends. How did we get here?
\nWhile the public relations battle raged, I wrote an article titled \u201cWhy is
\nBabangida so Angry?\u201d in which I advanced analytical theses on the
\nunderlying mindset of northern resistance that came on the heels of
\nmassive support for Goodluck Jonathan, who was then perceived as suffering
\npersecution in the hands of \u2018born-to-rule\u2019 Northerners. It was obvious
\nthen that the largely politically inexperienced Goodluck Jonathan
\nbasically survived under the clout of an astute Olusegun Obasanjo, who had
\ncome to know what it meant to liberate oneself from the fangs of northern
\nremote-control. The obvious northern strategy shortly before and after
\nJonathan\u2019s electoral victory in 2011 was thus to trim the wings and
\nneutralize the political toxicity of former President Olusegun Obasanjo to
\nbe able to get at the easier prey Goodluck Jonathan, who would then be far
\nless of a match.
\nProxy warfare was fought in the media, at the legislature \u2013 Tambuwal was
\nelected to sideline Obasanjo\u2019s anointed candidate \u2013 and internationally as
\nwell. Phrases like \u2018avoiding Obasanjo\u2019s third term through the back door\u2019
\nwere coined for maximum psychological impact. The Northerners successfully
\nimpressed on the Americans \u2013 who played a crucial role in saving Nigeria
\nfrom a post-Yar\u2019Adua state of anarchy \u2013 that Olusegun Obasanjo was a major
\nproblem. Thanks to Julian Assange, we now know through Wikileaks that even
\nthe Americans \u2013 singing from the same hymnbook as northern politicians \u2013
\nalso pressured Goodluck Jonathan to distance himself slowly from Olusegun
\nObasanjo. A pattern that was to play out again shortly after, when the
\nAmericans declared the Boko Haram insurgency as a by-product of economic
\nneglect!
\nIn the typical trademark character for which President Jonathan has become
\nknown as time went on, he nurtured an independent agenda that was at odd
\nwith the political designs of his mentor as well as that of his perceived
\nopponents in the north. After all, it had become obvious, in spite of all
\ninsinuations, that Olusegun Obasanjo did not premeditate the death of
\nUmaru Musa Yar\u2019Adua in office. His primary calculation at the time had
\nbeen to shop for a credible candidate to stop the rampaging Atiku
\njuggernaut that was born out of wanton disloyalty. Obasanjo\u2019s strategy
\nsince 2010 was thus obvious. Give back the Presidency to the North after
\njust one term of a Jonathan Presidency that emerged by accident having
\nalready had two Obasanjo\u2019s terms.
\nUnknown to all parties however, Jonathan and his kitchen cabinet has been
\nquietly focused on extending his tenure as President counting on a
\nstrategic policy of potential political destabilization in lieu of
\nObasanjo\u2019s godfather\u2019ism. Jonathan then resolved to consciously drift away
\nfrom Obasanjo and appease obvious northern forces with lofty appointments
\nin some clandestine power-sharing arrangement and juicy contract awards. A
\nstunned Obasanjo could only helplessly watch what he considered illogical
\nstrategic appointments and Jonathan\u2019s savvy political dribbling. President
\nObasanjo was given a major kick in the teeth when he made the daring move
\nto infiltrate the Boko Haram leadership structure at the budding stage and
\nmade recommendations on how to confront the menace. Jonathan\u2019s polite
\nrejection of his efforts became the first major sign of a clandestine
\nagenda that Obasanjo could not quite decipher.
\nJonathan at the time, did not seem to have fully realized the intricate
\nweb of northern political manipulations that cladded Boko Haram. He
\npursued his policy of appeasing northern elders unperturbed. He was
\nrepeatedly assured that the problem would be resolved in no time. After
\nall, he was visibly proven to be creating the requisite distance from
\nObasanjo thus rendering the continuation of the Northern policy of
\ntrimming down Obasanjo\u2019s influence unnecessary. The north could then
\nconcentrate on solving the major problem \u2013 Jonathan.
\nAt the height of all these, Jonathan in another characteristic mode,
\ncouldn\u2019t do better than opening another front in killing public sympathy.
\nHe shocked the nation with the deceitful removal of fuel subsidy stating
\nloud and clear that he was ready for a revolution.
\nIn this game of hide-and-seek however, everyone kept his cards close to
\nhis chest. Obasanjo had to quit in anger with a bang of the door and
\nJonathan spitting fire after him in a brutal show of wanton ingratitude.
\nThe successful pressure exerted by the deadly Boko Haram was not lost on
\nthe northern forces that partly perpetrated and sponsored it until it also
\nseems to have gotten out of their control. Repeated assurances that they
\nwere in control of the situation apparently pushed Jonathan into making
\nstrategically costly mistakes. National Security Adviser Azazzi was
\nsuddenly removed and died under bizarre circumstances shortly after he
\npointed accusing fingers at northern forces within the ruling party for
\nbeing behind the sustenance of the deadly sect.
\nJonathan trusted the northern elders and obviously granted them a free
\nhand in lobbying the Americans to steer clear of any involvement in the
\ndomestic conflict. Suddenly, the Americans whose elaborate intelligence
\nnetwork in Nigeria should have known better, were suddenly declaring Boko
\nHaram as a product of economic negligence. Even Jonathan was stunned but
\nwas assured that every means to keep the Americans at bay was legitimate
\nto avoid strains on other routine Nigerian sojourners traveling into
\nAmerica.
\nMeantime however, Boko Haram has become independently linked with Al-Qaeda
\nand grown more sophisticated and Jonathan realized only very late that
\nthere were no serious attempts to kill the movement at any time, by those
\nwho assured him of action in no time. On the contrary, plans were
\nadvancing to define and shape a post-Jonathan\u2019s Nigeria under a northern
\nleader that was being shopped for. Jonathan had to come out of hiding and
\nhave surrogates expose his worst-kept secret of seeking a second term in
\nthe Presidency.
\nMeanwhile, the north had long stopped antagonizing Olusegun Obasanjo, who
\nis now no longer available to see Jonathan\u2019s dream through and teaming up
\nwith erstwhile adversaries in the search for a strategic solution.
\nJonathan has realigned his apparatus to the hybrid foundation of persons
\nand threats. Persons with less political acumen and power base (Edwin
\nClark and a few militant noisemakers) and the threat of setting the Niger
\nDelta on fire if he is not re-elected!
\nUnfortunately however, the Northerners are equally as determined to give
\nhim a vicious fight. A poorly copied Obasanjo\u2019s template of whipping
\ndissenters in line through the misuse of the power of incumbency now seems
\nto be decimating his party\u2019s power base with the reach yet incalculable.
\n16 greater than 19 and 5 greater than 27 have been major disasters! Now,
\nhis erstwhile godfather and strategic powerhouse is no more! The public is
\nlargely disenchanted with spins and lies of achievements and improved
\nstandards while \u2018improved\u2019 power generation and privatization have so far,
\nfailed to produce lights in households. Major thieves of oil subsidy roam
\nfree. Government officials steal with impunity. Presidential actions are
\nseen to be hampering every meaningful fight against corruption.
\nPresident Jonathan is now left in the trap of chanting Sodom and Gomorra
\nin the Niger Delta like a roadside dog barking at the unstoppable caravan
\npulling on beyond its reach. The nation now hangs on the precipice with
\nthe President playing the last card of a National Conference. The outcome
\nwill be anybody\u2019s guess. But the writing on the wall portends a dismal
\nfuture and a risky course to chart!<\/p>\n
