Following extensive preparations, remarkable improvements, and lessons\u00a0learnt from\u00a0previous elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)\u00a0has assured\u00a0that it would deliver elections in 2015 that are better than those it
\nconducted in\u00a02011.<\/p>\n
The INEC further said it will not use the Manual and the Addendum\u00a0Registers for the\u00a0Ekiti and Osun governorship elections to be conducted this year. It willn only use\u00a0the Electronic Register.<\/p>\n
The INEC Chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, gave this assurance yesterday\u00a0when he\u00a0received the Netherlands Ambassador to Nigeria, John C.M. Groffen.<\/p>\n
Said he: \u201cWe\u2019ve done extensive preparations. We have brought additional and\u00a0remarkable improvement to the electoral process and we feel confident that\u00a0the\u00a0electoral process will be remarkably better.\u201d<\/p>\n
Professor Jega declared that the challenge the Commission faced in the recent\u00a0Anambra governorship election was a fluke and was not an indication of\u00a0what would\u00a0happen in 2015.<\/p>\n
The INEC Chairman said the Commission was committed to lifting the bar\u00a0remarkably\u00a0better than 2011 in terms of delivering elections that were free, fair and\u00a0credible.<\/p>\n
He explained that the task of the Commission as an Election Management\u00a0Body (EMB)\u00a0was to ensure that elections were conducted in such a fair and transparent\u00a0fashion\u00a0that they added to the deepening of Nigeria\u2019s democracy and the stability\u00a0of the\u00a0country.<\/p>\n
Professor Jega observed that getting elections right was a joint endeavour\u00a0with\u00a0critical stake-holders. He added that as the Commission moved towards\u00a0conducting the\u00a02015 General Elections, it would strengthen its relationship with its\u00a0stakeholders\u00a0and Development Partners.<\/p>\n
Ambassador Groffen who observed that a stable and inclusive Nigeria was\u00a0conducive\u00a0for business, said his country was deeply interested in seeing free, fair\u00a0elections\u00a0because they would make Nigeria a more stable democracy.<\/p>\n
