\u00a0…Says Some PDP Defectors will Return, Tukur’s Successor Emerges Monday.<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n

President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday declared that the ruling Peoples
\nDemocratic\u00a0Party (PDP) will continue to be the ruling party after 2015 adding that some
\ngovernors and members of PDP that defected to the All Progressive Congress
\n(APC)\u00a0will return soon.<\/p>\n

Jonathan stated this while speaking at the 63rd National Executive\u00a0Committee (NEC)f the PDP.<\/p>\n

This comes as the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples
\nDemocratic Party\u00a0(PDP) endorsed the resignation of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur as chairman of the
\nparty.\u00a0Jonathan had presented the resignation letter of Tukur to the NEC members.<\/p>\n

Presiding over formal ratification of Tukur’s resignation, Jonathan
\nfurther declared\u00a0that Tukur’s replacement from the North East would emerge next Monday at a
\nNECmeeting of the party.<\/p>\n

In a show of gratitude to sacked national chairman for his loyalty to the
\nparty, the
\npresident left with Tukur to the villa before the end of the NEC meeting
\nafter he
\nhad promised to give him a tougher job in appreciation of Tukur’s service
\nto the
\nparty.<\/p>\n

Jonathan while declaring the resignation of Tukur said “we have had some
\ninternal
\nproblems that had been agitating the minds of our people. And let us
\nreally commend
\nthe NWC of the party led by Bamanga Tukur.<\/p>\n

“The chairman of our party you have all known did not just wake up to be
\nchairman of
\nthe party. He is one of the founding fathers of our party, has held
\nseveral offices
\nand has done very well. And for us to make sure that we rest this issue,
\nthe party
\nchairman has agreed to step aside. (Greeted with applause and standing
\novation).<\/p>\n

“He is not guilty in anyway. In fact I have to give him an assignment that is
\ntougher than PDP. Because we need people like Bamanga Tukur to market this
\ncountry
\nand PDP, he has been doping that at the platform of African Roundtable but
\nhe will
\nget a tougher job than African Round Table.<\/p>\n

“So this is the letter from him announcing his stepping aside from office.
\nWe did
\nnot read it to the media, it is from the party chairman to the secretary
\nof the
\nparty.<\/p>\n

“Let us meet on monday so that we will formally inaugurate a new chairman,
\naccording
\nto our constitution. So between now and Monday, we will look at our party
\nleaders
\nfrom the North-East.”<\/p>\n

On the return of some of the governors and members of the PDP who left to
\nAPC the
\npresident said “I also use this opportunity to plead with our party
\nmembers to be
\nsteadfast and committed to party activities. Even some of those people who
\nappeared
\nto want to leave us and have left, from all indications and discussions
\nsome of them
\nwill come back to the party. All that we need to do is ensure that the
\nparty is
\nunited.”<\/p>\n

He said the party will henceforth hold more meetings. He highlighted that
\nhe has
\nagreed with the governors of the party meet every month in the interest of
\nthe party
\nand to fashion out ways to assist party members from state that are not
\ncontrolled
\nby PDP.<\/p>\n

He noted “We want our National Working Committee members to ensure more
\ncaucus
\nmeetings are held every quarter. We don’t want to miss any one. And for
\nthe NEC
\nmeeting we believe it should be held more regularly because this is an
\nelection
\nyear, I have no alternative than to call NEC meeting so we have to liase
\nwith the
\nNWC to if possible hold the meeting every other month.”<\/p>\n

He charged party members to be steadfast to party activities, stressing
\nthat as
\nlong as party remains united, PDP will continue to be the ruling party.<\/p>\n

While he added that PDP has created jobs through Agricultural sector, he
\nsaid by
\nnext Monday a dry season farming programme will be launched, adding that
\nN14bn would
\nbe made available for the project which targets 10 states from the North.<\/p>\n

Jonathan who said the party has continued to bring development initiatives
\nover the
\nyears said his administration will continue to deliver dividends of
\ndemocracy to the
\npeople.<\/p>\n

Speaking earlier, Tukur, who presided over the meeting, in his opening and
\nfinal
\nspeech as chairman of the party, warned the PDP not to take its status as
\nruling
\nparty for granted adding that gloating over being in power and remaining
\nin power no
\nmatter what, is dangerous, destructive and anti-democratic.<\/p>\n

He said “We, as a ruling Party must therefore take our leading position
\nseriously
\nand consistently pursue the enhancement of the good of the peoples of
\nNigeria and
\nalso the grassroot appeal of our Party.<\/p>\n

“We can do this by upholding internal democracy, transparency, fairness
\nand probity
\nin all our processes, as well as delivering through our governments, good
\ngovernance
\nand services which impact positively on the lives of the hoi polloi.<\/p>\n

“It follows that gloating over being in power and remaining in power no
\nmatter what,
\nis dangerous, destructive and anti-democratic. Preoccupation with power
\ntussles and
\nundue confrontation have strangulating effect on any political platform.
\nAnd ours\u00a0cannot be different.<\/p>\n

“We must remind ourselves that politics is the only sensible peaceful
\nmeans mankind
\nhas devised to discipline and manage diverse, competing interests in
\nsociety; whileremaining focused on the improvement and transformation of their existential
\npossibilities. A conscious effort therefore, must be made to avoid
\nself-inflicted
\ndifficulties even as we remain focused on the promotion of cooperation,
\ncohesion and
\ninclusivity among social forces and group interests in our Party and
\nsociety.”<\/p>\n

However some of the contenders for Tukur’s replacement are minister of
\ntransport,
\nIdris Umar from Borno State, former Deputy National Secretary, Dr. Babayo
\nShehu and
\nformer Bauchi state governor, Alhaji Adamu Muazu,
\npioneer National Treasurer of PDP, Shettima Mustafa;<\/p>\n

Other are former national Chairman of Grassroots Development Movement
\n(GDM), Alhaji
\nGambo Lawan,
\nChairman of Federal Government Contract Verification Committee, Alhaji
\nSherif Bunu
\nand former FCT Minister, Alhaji Abba Gana.<\/p>\n
