Mrs Modupe Onitiri-Abiola, one of the wives of late Chief MKO Abiola, on
\nSaturday declared that she would contest the 2015 governorship election in
\nthe state on the ticket of ACCORD Party.
\nOnitiri-Abiola, wife of the acclaimed winner of the annulled June 12,
\n1993, presidential election, made her intention public in a statement
\nissued by her in Lagos.
\nThe aspirant said that she joined the party to assist in the eradication
\nof poverty
\n\u201cSince there is no Independent Candidacy in Nigerian Political System yet,
\nI needed to join a political party.
\n\u201cDuring my search for the party to join, I found out that what we have on
\nground is severe poverty.
\n\u201cI saw that the people of Lagos are yet to truly receive the dividends of
\ndemocracy they deserve.
\n\u201cI have seen the suffering of those caught in the grasp of poverty. I have
\nalso seen the great potentials our state can achieve,\u201d she said.
\nOnitiri-Abiola said if she became successful at the polls, poverty,
\ngod-fatherism, money politics and corruption would be eliminated.
\nShe said it was time for government at all levels to truly serve the
\npeople\u2019s interest and raise their hopes and opportunities.
\nThe aspirant said that she worked with her late husband in the struggle
\nfor the actualisation of the June 12 elections annulled by the military
\nregime of former president Ibrahim Babangida in 1993.
\nShe, however, said ACCORD party was the new way that would lead the people
\nto the promised land where true benefits of democracy would be received.
\nThe aspirant urged the people to stand up and accept change, adding that
\nher party had their interests at heart.
\nOnitire-Abiola had in 2013 declared her intention to contest the 2015
\ngovernorship seat in the state, but did not mention the platform on which
\nshe would contest. (NAN)
