DELTA State Governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan has assured Nigerians that the
\ncountry would not disintegrate in spite of the challenges and ravaging
\nfire of ethnic nationalism in the country.<\/p>\n
Governor Uduaghan who gave this assurance at the Opening ceremony of the
\nSouthern Nigeria Peoples Assembly [SNPA] 4th General Conference in Asaba
\nsaid that the national conference sanctioned by President Goodluck
\nJonathan\u2019s administration has provide avenue for Nigerians to deliberate
\non issues that will move the nation forward.<\/p>\n
He explained that though the Jonathan\u2019s administration was beset by series
\nof challenges, the President has handled these challenges with maturity
\nand sincerity.<\/p>\n
He observed that one of such challenges was the issue of Boko Haram, and
\nemphasized that the activities of Boko Haram has been reduced and there
\nare signs that the militant group will see reasons to embrace peaceful
\nco-existence in the country.<\/p>\n
He disclosed that: \u201cThe Jonathan\u2019s administration has done a lot to
\nimprove the nation\u2019s economy and engendered a lot of growth and foreign
\ndirect investments and interest\u201d, stressing that the benefits to the
\nmasses will take some time to trickle down to them.<\/p>\n
Dr Uduaghan commended the people of Southern Nigeria for \u2018talking\u2019 noting
\nthat those who are talking often do not engage in violence.<\/p>\n
\u201cPresident Jonathan is providing a platform for us to discuss with the
\nnational conference and we are free to say anything in this world except
\nthe disintegration of Nigeria and when we discuss, issues are resolved,\u201d
\nthe Governor said, adding that the people of Southern Nigeria should be
\nprepared to make their points known during the conference.<\/p>\n
He emphasized, \u201clet us be hopeful, let us be positive because, the future
\nof Nigeria is bright, Nigeria will not disintegrate in the era of
\nPresident Goodluck Jonathan,\u201d adding, \u201cno ravaging fire of ethnic
\nnationalism can consume this country.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Governor hinted that the Governors of South South and South East
\ngeo-political zones were meeting regularly and plans were on for Governors
\nof South West geo-political zone to join the forum for it to become The
\nSouthern Nigeria Governors Forum, noting that there was need for such
\nforum because of common economic and other social issues affecting the
\nregion.<\/p>\n
He observed that if Deltans can live in peace despite their ethnic
\ndifferences, Nigerians can live in peace and work for the growth of the
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
The Chairman of the SNPA and leader of the South South delegation to the
\nmeeting, Pa Edwin Clark said that convening the meeting of the people of
\nSouthern Nigeria was very important for the people of the region to speak
\nwith one voice, stating, \u201cNigeria belongs to all of us, we must show
\nrespect for all of us, we are part of this country, we have equal right in
\nthis country, fight for your right, protect your right.\u201d<\/p>\n
Chief Francis William who delivered a lecture at the ceremony said:
\n\u201cPresident Jonathan has the right to contest for the Presidential position
\nin 2015\u201d and called for regional cooperation.
