SECRETARY to the Government to the\u00a0Federation Anyim Pius\u00a0Anyim has asked the\u00a0Financial Reporting\u00a0Council of Nigeria (FRCN)
\nto audit the Central Bank\u00a0of Nigeria (CBN).<\/p>\n
Acting on President Goodluck Jonathan\u2019s\u00a0directive, Anyim gave the\u00a0FRCN six weeks to do job.<\/p>\n
The audit is to examine the books showing how\u00a0suspended CBN Governor\u00a0Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has\u00a0run the apex bank.<\/p>\n
Sanusi was suspended last Thursday for alleged\u00a0\u201cmisconduct\u201d and\u00a0\u201cfinancial recklessness\u201d.<\/p>\n
He denied any wrongdoing, challenging\u00a0his accusers to open the\u00a0books.<\/p>\n
The presidential directive \u2013 to the FRCN \u2013 is believed\u00a0to be a response to\u00a0Sanusi\u2019s stand on the row\u00a0between him and the\u00a0authorities.<\/p>\n
The fresh audit is a follow-up to an earlier on\u00a0by auditing giants\u00a0Coopers and Lybrand.<\/p>\n
Sanusi has accused the Nigerian National\u00a0Petroleum Corporation\u00a0(NNPC) of being unable to\u00a0account for $20 billion oil
\nrevenue. The argument\u00a0was still raging when he\u00a0was suddenly suspended\u00a0\u2013 an action the President\u00a0defended last night.<\/p>\n
Dr Jonathan said he has \u201cabsolute power\u201d to\u00a0suspend Central Bank of\u00a0Nigeria (CBN) Governor\u00a0Sanusi Lamido Sanusi
\nfrom office.<\/p>\n
According to him, it would have been inappropriate\u00a0to have allowed Sanusi to\u00a0remain in office while the\u00a0report of the FRCN, which
\nindicted the CBN 2012\u00a0audit report, was being\u00a0considered. He said\u00a0because Sanusi is the\u00a0chairman of the CBN\u00a0board of directors, it was
\nmandatory for him to be\u00a0out of office during\u00a0investigation.<\/p>\n
Dr. Jonathan spoke during the \u201cPresidential Media\u00a0chat\u201d aired on national\u00a0television.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, I have absolute power. The CBN is not\u00a0well defined in the\u00a0Nigerian Constitution,\u2019\u2019 he\u00a0said, in response to a\u00a0question by one of the
\npanelists on the propriety\u00a0of his action to suspend\u00a0Sanusi.<\/p>\n
