Babangida Aliyu of Niger, made this known in Minna on\r\nMonday at the National Association of Nigerian Students\u2019 (NANS) award\r\nceremony to distinguished Nigerians.\r\n\r\nThe forum also agreed to harmonise fees in its tertiary institutions and\r\nreintroduce the \u201cGrade 2 Teachers Training Programme\u2019\u2019, abolished in\r\nNigeria to improve the standard of teaching in schools.\r\n\r\nRepresented by Dr Muhammad Nuhu, Commissioner for Tertiary Education,\r\nAliyu said that the forum also decided to close the educational gap\r\nbetween male and female students in the region.\r\n\r\nAliyu, who described education as the bedrock of any development, said\r\nthey had also resolved to establish schools of preliminary studies to\r\nprepare students for admission into tertiary institutions.\r\n\r\nHe said an education conference aimed at addressing the problems\r\nassociated with the development of education in the region, the problem of\r\nAlmajiri and falling standard of education will be held soon.\r\n\r\nAliyu said the state government had computerised the payment of\r\nscholarship to students in tertiary institutions and introduced the\r\nscratch card to all beneficiaries to block wastage.\r\n\r\nHe said the state government was spending an average of N1.8 billion on\r\nscholarship and other allowances yearly.\r\n\r\nThe governor commended NANS for the recognition of those that had\r\ncontributed to the growth of education in the region.\r\n\r\nAliyu assured that the state government would collaborate with NANS to\r\nconstruct its befitting secretariat in Minna.\r\n\r\nEarlier, the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, who was a special guest at\r\nthe event, commended the governor for the transformation of the state.\r\n(NAN)<\/pre>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Minna \u2013 The Northern States Governors\u2019 Forum has resolved to abolish payment of fees in secondary schools in the region in a bid to boost enrolment of students.
