The Presidency has warned the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of
\nNigeria, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi to desist from misinforming the public and
\nthe international community but rather respond to charges of financial
\nrecklessness, gross misconduct among others levelled against him by the
\nFinancial Reporting Council of Nigeria.<\/p>\n
This was contain in a statement by the President\u2019s spokesperson, Reuben
\nAbati.<\/p>\n
The statement reads;<\/p>\n
We have noted with disappointment, the unrelenting attempt by the
\nGovernor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi to falsely
\nportray his recent suspension from office as an attempt by the Presidency
\nto bury his allegation that huge sums of money due to the Federation
\nAccount are unaccounted for by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation
\n(NNPC).<\/p>\n
The Presidency wishes to reaffirm that Mallam Sanusi\u2019s suspension has
\nabsolutely nothing to do with his unproven and inconsistent claim that
\n$49.8 Billion, $12 Billion or $20 Billion is missing from the national
\ntreasury.<\/p>\n
As was clearly stated in the letter suspending him from office and
\nconfirmed by President Goodluck Jonathan in his last Presidential Media
\nChat, Mallam Sanusi\u2019s suspension was wholly based on the need for him to
\nstep aside while the weighty charges of financial recklessness, gross
\nmisconduct and persistent disregard for laid down rules and regulations in
\nthe management of the Central Bank made against him by the Financial
\nReporting Council of Nigeria and others are properly investigated.<\/p>\n
It is most unfortunate that instead of trying to provide some reasonable
\nresponse to the clear and unambiguous query of his official conduct as
\nGovernor of the Central Bank, Mallam Sanusi\u00a0 has cynically chosen to whip
\nup public sympathy for himself and anger against the Federal Government by
\ndeliberately misleading unwary Nigerians and the international community
\ninto believing the falsehood that he is being punished for exposing
\ncorruption.<\/p>\n
In recent days, the suspended CBN Governor has, following in the footsteps
\nof others who have an axe to grind with the government, taken to spreading
\nhis false claims and allegations through gullible foreign media
\ncorrespondents, telling them among other things that his threat to force
\ncommercial banks to open up their books to unravel the whereabouts of the
\n\u201cmissing\u201d funds whether $49.8 Billion, $12 Billion or $20 Billion,
\nultimately led to his suspension.<\/p>\n
He also continues to make the mischievous claim that the government is
\nsomehow involved in a scam to divert huge sums of money from the
\nFederation Account through the misappropriation of kerosene subsidy funds.<\/p>\n
Mallam Sanusi\u2019s allegations are patently untrue. But Government is making
\nno effort to bury them as he falsely claims. Relevant committees of the
\nNational Assembly are still investigating the claims and the suspended CBN
\nGovernor remains free to give evidence before them in support of his
\nallegations.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, in keeping with its avowed commitment to full transparency,
\nopenness and accountability in governmental affairs, the Federal
\nGovernment has authorized the engagement of reputable international firms
\nfor the recommended forensic audit of NNPC accounts.<\/p>\n
The Presidency condemns Mallam Sanusi\u2019s resort to playing politics with
\nserious national issues.\u00a0 His suggestion that the phantom missing funds
\nmay have been diverted to fund campaigns for next year\u2019s general elections
\nis mischievous, irresponsible and designed to incite other political
\nparties and members of the public against the Federal Government.<\/p>\n
The claim which amounts to cheap blackmail against the government and was
\nclearly made in furtherance of a selfish personal agenda is most
\nunbecoming of someone who still holds the High Office of Governor of the
\nCentral Bank of Nigeria.<\/p>\n
The Presidency would not ordinarily have wished to join issues with Mallam
\nSanusi who as CBN Governor remains an appointee of the President, but the
\nvery unacceptable manner in which Sanusi has been misinforming the public
