Port Harcourt – Mr Chidi Lloyd, Majority Leader of the Rivers House of
\nAssembly, was on Thursday discharged and acquitted by a High Court in Port
\nHarcourt over a charge of attempted murder.
\nJustice Ledan Nyordee, who delivered the judgment, said there was nothing
\nthe court could do in the matter as the police was not willing to
\nprosecute the case.<\/p>\n
Lloyd was arrested and charged with attempted murder of Mr Michael Chinda,
\n(PDP- Obio\/Akpor 11) in the state legislature.<\/p>\n
Lloyd was alleged to have hit Chinda on the head with a mace during a
\nfight between the supporters of Gov. Chibuike Ameachi and anti-Amaechi
\nlegislators in July 2013.<\/p>\n
NAN also recalls that the state legislative complex was closed down after
\nthe free-for-all.
\nThe State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice had written the
\ncourt to inform it that the police did not send the case file to his
\noffice.<\/p>\n
Justice Nyordee said the court was handicapped in the matter as the police
\nwas not willing to prosecute the case and cited the relevant section of
\nthe constitution to support the court\u2019s decision.
\nNAN further recalls that the matter had suffered several adjournments due
\nto the police \u201cinability\u2019\u2019 to make the case file available to the
\nattorney-general.<\/p>\n
Mr Beluolisa Nwaofor (SAN), counsel to the accused person, told reporters
\nthat \u201cmy client is free as far as this matter is concerned.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou will recall that the attorney-general and commissioner for justice
\nhad written the court to inform it that the police did not send the case
