President of the Senate, Senator David Mark has underscored the inevitability of the media in the propagation and sustenance of democracy saying that only the sector can save democracy.<\/p>\n

” The role of the media is critical in any democracy. Nobody can underestimate or undermine the crucial role of the press . It is a huge responsibility that must be jealously guarded for the good of the society”‘ Senator Mark told a delegation of the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) who visited him in his office in Abuja today.<\/p>\n

To this end, Senator Mark reminded the media of the principle of fairness , balance and objectivity in order to uphold the public trust and confidence at all times.<\/p>\n

He specifically , told the NTA to among other things to rise up the challenges of modern broadcasting in order to be able to compete favourably in the dynamic and challenging world of the media.<\/p>\n

Senator Mark noted that although NTA is a government owned Media outfit, it should not in the discharge of its duties ignore other aspects of the society if it must retain viewership.<\/p>\n

He said:”Today, you face competition from other media organizations within and outside Nigeria. If you focus on government alone in your reportage, you are more likely to lose follower ship . Therefore, you must balance government interest and others. You can criticize government where and when necessary.”<\/p>\n

Earlier, the Director General of NTA, Mr. Sola Omole, briefed the President of the Senate on the innovations going on to repositioned the foremost broadcasting organization to meet the modern global trend.<\/p>\n

Under the on going innovation, Omole assured that NTA would be transformed to its ore-eminence position, promote the Nigeria and Africa agenda for the benefit of the country and her people .<\/p>\n

The NTA boss was optimistic that the medium as a National television would continue to promote the peaceful coexistence and unity of Nigeria.<\/p>\n
