Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has warned against the excessive use
\nof power by the PDP-led federal government, a tendency, he said, was not
\ngood for decent democratic practice.
\nAtiku, who was reacting to the impeachment of Governor Murtala Nyako of
\nAdamawa State, said in a statement issued by his media office in Abuja
\nthat wielding the axe of impeachment against elected public office holders
\nto settle scores by the PDP-led federal government would needlessly build
\nup tension in the country.
\nThe former Vice President said the reckless use of impeachment to settle
\nscores could not have been the intention of the framers of the 1999
\nConstitution.
\nHe said the frequency with which elective officials were being shot down
\nby impeachment would destroy the whole purpose of inserting the
\nimpeachment clause in the Constitution.
\nHe regretted that the use of impeachment to harass and humiliate perceived
\nopponents by the PDP-led federal government would ultimately bastardize
\nthe spirit in which the constitution provides for the impeachment clause.
\nThe former Vice President admonished the PDP-led federal government to
\ntake it easy in the way they use power, adding that the constitution was
\nnot meant to provide ammo to anybody to harass and humiliate opponents or
\nforce them out of office.
\nHe criticized the use of financial inducements to influence the removal of
\nperceived opponents from office. According to him, triumphalism in the
\nsuppression of opponents is a bad omen for democracy.<\/p>\n
