Determined to Combat smuggling to a standstill, the Federal Operations
\nUnit (F.O.U) Zone \u2018C\u2019 of Nigeria Customs Service has recorded an
\nunprecedented thirty-seven (37) seizures in the month of July within the
\nSouth East and South-South states of the federation with a Duty Paid Value
\n(DPV) of two hundred and fifty-two million, one hundred and twenty-six
\nthousand, eight hundred naira (N252,126,800.00)<\/p>\n
The Customs Area Controller of the Unit, Dimka Victor David disclosed
\nwhile briefing the newsmen in Owerri that thirty-six (36) out of the
\nthirty-seven (37) seizures recorded, are vehicle ranging from Toyota
\nHighlander, Infinity jeep, Lexus jeep and cars, BMW, Toyota Avalon, Toyota
\nCorolla, and Toyota 4 Runner among others.<\/p>\n
According to him, this is an indication of an increase in the number of
\nvehicles being smuggled in the zone within the period under review.<\/p>\n
Dimka recalled that there was a similar increase of smuggling in rice
\nabout five months ago but was effectively tackled and the smuggling
\nreduced to the barest minimum as well as that of imported frozen poultry
\nproducts done earlier in the year.<\/p>\n
Additionally, Dimka said that the influx of imported furniture, second
\nhand clothing, foreign detergents and foot wears have equally been
\nfrontally tackled and also the smuggling reduced to the barest minimum.<\/p>\n
Being die-hard criminals who will always devise other means to ruin the
\nnation\u2019s economy with their illicit business, Dimka stated that smugglers
\nare now into smuggling of vehicles, but assured that his men have all it
\ntakes to neutralize their antics and also ensure that those apprehended do
\nnot go scot free with the smuggled vehicles.<\/p>\n
He further assured that the unit will neither fold her arms nor sit on her
\noars and watch the smugglers sabotage the nation\u2019s economy hence he
\nresolved that even the car dealers will subsequently be compelled to
\npresent the vehicle clearing documents in their shops.<\/p>\n
Dimka expressed immense gratitude to the Comptroller-general of Customs
\nAlhaji Abdullahi Dikko Inde, CFR for his sustained support to the unit,
\nstressing that this has continued to spur officers and men of the unit to
\ngreater height in the performance of their statutory duties of fighting
\nsmuggling.<\/p>\n
He therefore passionately implored members of the public with useful
\ninformation bordering on smuggling to volunteer such information to the
\nunit to enable them fish out smugglers from their various places of
