The Federal Government has warned Nigerians to stop visiting Liberia,
\nSierra-Leone and Guinea because the three countries remain on danger list
\nover the ravaging Ebola virus.<\/p>\n
The Minister of State for Health, Dr. Khaliru Al-Hassan who visited Kano,
\nnorthern Nigeria to rob minds with government authorities and traditional
\nrulers on how to curtail spread of dangerous diseases also declared that
\nthe Federal Government has banned movement of dead bodies from within and
\noutside the country as part of measures to avoid the spread of the Ebola
\nVirus.<\/p>\n
Al-Hassan who was in Kano during the third meeting of Northern Traditional
\nLeaders on Primary Health-Care said that transfer of dead bodies remain a
\nthreat in the spread of the deadly virus.<\/p>\n
His words, \u0153henceforth, dead bodies would not be allowed to be
\ntransferred from one part of the country to another. Wherever the dead
\ndied they should be buried there. We have suspended bringing corpses from
\noutside the country, particularly these three countries\u201dLiberia,
\nSierra-Leone and Guinea.<\/p>\n
\u0153The dead in these three countries should be buried there; and we will
\nnot allow anybody to come regardless of his position. We have directed the
\nappropriate authorities to ensure that this is not done; therefore, we
\nwant to appeal to people for their understanding. We are not here to
\npoliticize. Ebola is not a political disease.<\/p>\n
According to him, the Ebola outbreak remain a sad situation for Nigeria
\nand Africa, at large, noting that, \u0153sadly, an American-Liberian brought
\nit into our country. This is very sad, but it is too late now, it has
\nhappened, we just have to rise up to the occasion. I will like to assure
\nthe entire public that the Federal Government is up and doing. The
\nsituation is under control.<\/p>\n
We have instituted a lot of measures to ensure that it does not spread any
\nfurther. We are working tirelessly with our partners\u201dWHO, USAID and all
\nother international organs. We are doing the best. With our international
\npartners to contend the outbreak; and we want to dispel all the rumours
\nthat are going round that Ebola is seen in other parts of the country. So
\nfar, Ebola is only limited to Lagos and; already all the suspected cases
\nand those who are about to be positive\u201dand the confirmed cases are under
\nstrict control; they are under insulation with all the international
\nstandards being observed\u201dand other contacts are being monitored.<\/p>\n
\u0153As we are talking now, we have about 139 people less than 24 hours
\nstrict watch for any tempting sings of this disease. Those who are
\nconfirmed are under strict control measures; and we have instituted a lot
\nof measures to ensure that it does not get out of Lagos state. So, we want
\nto appeal to people to be calm and not being apprehensive. People have
\nbeen receiving false text messages that salt\u201dif you either take it or
\nwash yourself can cure, let me say it again, we have stated it before that
\nEbola has no known cure at present because the Americans\u201dthe drug they
\nare using is a test-drug\u201dit has not been proven to be effective\u201dand it
\nhas always been on animals.<\/p>\n
\u0153It has never been tested on human beings, except the first two American
\nvictims who are now in their custody. So, there no known cure; and taking
\nsalt will be dangerous to your health because it can raise your blood
\npressure. For those who already have hypertension, that will like adding
\npetrol to fire. So, we want to caution people to stop taking anything that
\nhave not been certified medically. Presently, a very high-powered team has
\nbeen constituted specifically to look into any possible drug that may have
\ncure from this virus. Presently, they have already swung into action. The
\nbitter kola is also a rumour, so, people should not go out of their way to
\ninjure their health.<\/p>\n
He also appealed to the government and people of Kano state to also
\ndisperse the rumour bathing with salt and chewing bitter Kola, adding
\nthat, \u0153we have advocated that people should be very careful about their
\npersonal hygiene. Of course, we know we are very good travelers as
\nNigerians\u201dand we have been advocating for people to be very careful
\ntravelling into countries like Liberia, Sierra-Leone and Guinea.<\/p>\n
\u0153These are all now under strict ban\u201dand Kano-based business men should
\nbe careful where they go for their businesses; because it does not worth
\nit to get rich and but at the same time to bring in Ebola. So, people
\nshould be careful, and they should continue to live their lives normally.
\nAn Ebola victim is not dangerous to the general public.<\/p>\n
\u0153An Ebola patient is more dangerous to the health workers because they
\nare the point people. When an Ebola patient is sick, they either stay at
\nhome or go to the hospital, so I want to appeal all our health workers
\nthat it is no more business as usual consulting in our clinics. We shall
\ninstitute a very high standard of practice. I appeal to all our
\ninstitutions\u201dthe Teaching Hospitals, the Federal Medical Centres to
\ninstitute immediately, as a matter of urgency infection control
\ncommittees\u201dfor those who doesn\u2122t have it, they must place an order
\nimmediately, to institute infection control emergency in their
\nhospitals.<\/p>\n
