Bayelsans<\/span>\u00a0have commended the State Government over the recent constitution of an 11 man special task force to ensure adequate security of lives and property on the waterways in the state.<\/span><\/div>\n
Residents in some of the communities where cases of sea piracy, kidnapping and pipeline\u00a0vandalization<\/span>\u00a0were on the increase, expressed relief that security would further be strengthened when the marine component of the state security outfit, Operation Door Akpo becomes operational.<\/span><\/div>\n
According to Mr.\u00a0Ebiakpo<\/span>\u00a0James from Ekeremor local government area, perpetrators of sea piracy, bunkering and other related vices would be reduced to the barest minimum with the policing of the creeks and the waterways by the task force.<\/span><\/div>\n
They particularly praised the government for the choice of membership of the task force, which is drawn from experienced persons, who have deep knowledge of the creeks and rivulets\u00a0criss-crossing<\/span>\u00a0the state and have been working closely with security personnel in checking pipeline vandalism and other acts of criminality.<\/span><\/div>\n
Also in her commendation, Mrs.\u00a0Ebiendu<\/span>\u00a0Philip expressed joy, that commuters, particularly traders would feel safe to travel on the waterways with their wares, noting that sea piracy and hostage taking have had adverse effects on\u00a0socio-economic<\/span>activities in the area.<\/span><\/div>\n
Mrs.\u00a0Biobelemoye<\/span>\u00a0Telimoye and Mr.\u00a0Meindiyo<\/span>\u00a0Baralate, who observed that the inaccessibility of the creeks in the hinterlands have remained a major factor in contributing to the incessant cases of criminal activities, \u00a0expressed optimism that with the ongoing construction of the Ogbia-Nembe road, life would be a lot easier for residents of\u00a0Nembe<\/span>, Brass and Akassa areas in the state.<\/span><\/div>\n
Their words: \u201cIn the absence of security, there will be no meaningful development either from the public or private sector and social and economic activities will come to a stand still. As residents of Oluasiri in Brass local government area, it is a thing of joy to us that the Governor Seriake Dickson led administration has introduced security measures both on land and on the waterways to make life more comfortable for us.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Lamenting the level of devastation on the environment caused by operators of illegal refineries, Mrs.\u00a0Toinpre<\/span>\u00a0Eteli<\/span>, Mr.Yebei<\/span>\u00a0Teinbogha and Mr.\u00a0Amalayon<\/span>\u00a0Tukpakiri expressed gratitude to the government for the steps taken to curb criminal activities on the waterways as it would stop further degradation of the ecosystem and the destruction of the livelihood of the people, whose major occupations are farming and fishing.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
They were of the opinion that security of lives and property are the primary responsibilities of government, stating that the present administration has lived up to expectation with the huge investments being made in the sub sector to guarantee the security of the people.<\/span><\/div>\n
Throwing more light on the duties of the task force, the Special Adviser to the Bayelsa State Governor on Security Matters, Rtd Col. Bernard Kenebai, explained that, the task force will among other things, liaise with community leaders, especially youth groups to provide community based security in collaboration with relevant security agencies.<\/span><\/div>\n
While assuring that, the Restoration administration will give the needed support to the task force to operate optimally, he also called on the people of the state, especially community leaders and residents of\u00a0riverine<\/span>\u00a0communities to cooperate with the task force to ensure safety of lives and property in the waterways.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
