style=\"color: #000000;\">Ever since former Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) chairman,<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nuhu Ribadu, indicated interest in moving to the Peoples Democratic Party<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(PDP), disquiet has reigned in the opposition All Progressives Congress<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(APC).\u00a0 As efforts by the party hierarchy to discourage his defection<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">failed, disquiet gradually gave way to disdain and Ribadu became the butt<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">of virulent attacks from his former party men.\u00a0 The hypocrites now take pot<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">shots at his shining service records: while some said he was power-hungry,<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">others labelled him an ungrateful politician.\u00a0 Like eating sour grapes,<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">bitterness within the APC has never been more profound.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The whining in the APC over Ribadu is understandable.\u00a0 Not only does it<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">portray the APC in the worst possible light, it defined the rot in the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">major opposition camp like never before.\u00a0 Kano governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso,<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">tried to make their burden lighter by adding a spin, that it (defection)<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">would turn out Ribadu\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s loss more than that of his party.\u00a0 It was a bad way<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">to spin.\u00a0 However one looks at it, the situation in a party must be of the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">worst kind to make the presidential torch-bearer in one of the legacy<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">parties-ACN-in as recent as the 2011 elections to jump ship.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As the APC sulks over Ribadu, the atmosphere is cheery in the PDP which<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">sees it as the arrival of a brother who has been on an endless sojourn in<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the wilderness.\u00a0 Even as Ribadu was flying the ACN presidential flag in the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">2011 elections, many pundits said he was like a stranger in the party.\u00a0 His<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">sojourn in the opposition camp didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t just add up because he had PDP blood<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">running in his veins, literally.\u00a0 To buttress the fact that the ruling<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">party connected so well with his principles, the former EFCC boss was<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">in February<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">2012 appointed to chair the 20-member Petroleum Revenue Special Taskforce.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">was the first appointment to be accepted by the former EFCC boss whose<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">tenure at the anti-graft agency drew accolades during the former President<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Olusegun Obasanjo\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s regime, and as he enthused, it was an opportunity to be<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">part of the Jonathan administration\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s efforts to sanitise the petroleum<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">industry.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The question is: was he really a committed opposition politician?\u00a0 The<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">answer, of course, is no; Ribadu has always been a sojourner in the APC.\u00a0 His<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">sojourn, first in the ACN, which later teamed up with others to become APC,<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">was for him an eye opener: the renowned anti-corruption Czar was forced to<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">dine with strange bedfellows who had no respect for either political due<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">process or party internal democracy.\u00a0 In spite of their \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcprogressive\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">tag,<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">he must have found out to his dismay that the APC does not practise the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ideals it preaches.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While he lasted in the opposition enclave, it was easy for Ribadu to emerge<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">as its moral compass, working hard to ensure the party walks its talk.\u00a0<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Whether<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">it earned him the 2011 presidential ticket of the ACN on merit, or he was<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">simply one of the political guinea-pigs in Bola Tinubu\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s political<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">laboratory is not the issue here.\u00a0 What was most irritating was the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">treacherous manner in which Tinubu, the ACN godfather purportedly traded<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">away his support base for a mess of financial pottage, and turned Ribadu<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">into a political orphan.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As far as the 2011 presidential election was concerned, Ribadu who only won<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">in Osun State, was for the most part, on his own.\u00a0 The much support he<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">garnered across the country was largely on the force of his moral persona,<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and in spite of Tinubu and his band of renegades.\u00a0 It is still that moral<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">force that is at play in Adamawa, where he has explained that his decision<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">to quit the APC for the PDP was taken in the state\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s overriding<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">interest.\u00a0 Any<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">honest man who seeks to serve requires a platform devoid of deceit and<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">unnecessary baggage.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some few weeks ago, shortly after the impeachment of Vice Admiral Murtala<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nyako as governor, the same Tinubu and Chief Bisi Akande had committed<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">another f*aux pax*.\u00a0 The APC leaders had asked their former presidential<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">candidate whom they knew was preparing for another shot at the presidency,<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">to forget the idea and go for the governorship of Adamawa state instead.\u00a0 It<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">was perfidy of the worst kind.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Abubakar Atiku whom he had indicted on corruption charges as EFCC chairman<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">in 2006, was no less treacherous.\u00a0 Though he learnt long ago that Atiku\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">politics is defined by his interest and not the collective good, he must<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">have wondered how he co-habited with the man for that long. The last straw,<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">of course, was the man\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s cat-and-mouse game during the battle to save<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Governor Nyako from imminent impeachment.\u00a0 Unlike Ribadu who had fought<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">doggedly for Nyako\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s survival, Atiku clearly worked against the interest of<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the party in which he was supposed to be one of its leaders.\u00a0 To be saddled<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">with such a character going into the Adamawa poll was to make his<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">aspiration to serve his people, dead on arrival.\u00a0 When you add the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">insincerity and large baggage of corruption by other known leaders of the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">APC, Ribadu knew it was time to go.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ribadu may have returned to where he really belongs but for the APC, the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">consequences are dire indeed.\u00a0 By joining the PDP which flag he is expected<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">to fly in the Adamawa governorship election in October, if he wins the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">party primary, Ribadu\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s defection can rightly be interpreted that the APC<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">has no fighting chance in a state it only recently lost.\u00a0 Or could Ribadu<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">have abandoned the party if his chances were brighter there?\u00a0 The second,<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and perhaps the most fatal, is that Ribadu\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s bold move has likely opened<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the exit door to several other dispirited politicians who are increasingly<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">becoming uncomfortable with the arbitrariness in the APC.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 &#8211;<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 *Abubakar Galadima sent this piece from Abuja.*<\/span><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Abubakar GaladimaEver since former Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) chairman,Nuhu Ribadu, indicated interest in moving to the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), disquiet has reigned in the opposition All Progressives&hellip;<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":30269,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_lmt_disableupdate":"","_lmt_disable":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[7],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-30428","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-articles-opinions"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.8 -
