(NHIS),<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dr. \u2018Femi Thomas has stated that the Scheme is set to launch Community<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Based Health Insurance Programme (CBHIP) in at least three Local<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Government Areas of each state of the federation before the end of the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">year.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He made this disclosure at the official flag off of the Ukana West Ward II<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Community Based Health Insurance Scehme, which took place at the Primary<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Health Center in Ikot \u2013 Ideh in Essien Udim LGA of Akwa Ibom State,<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">recently.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to the NHIS Boss, \u2018\u2019the Scheme is aware that the country has a<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">very large informal sector and therefore there is no way we can achieve<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the presidential mandate of 30% coverage without tapping into the informal<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">sector\u201d.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2018\u2019The CBHIP is therefore a veritable tool to ensuring wider coverage,<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">increased ownership and entrenching the culture of health insurance in the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nigerian public\u201d; he said.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He further stated that the scheme is ready to invest money and other<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">material resources to develop the Community Based Health Insurance<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Programme all over the country.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2018\u2019To this end, the scheme has mandated all its offices in the states to<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">develop the programme in at least three LGAs\u00a0 before the end of the year\u201d,<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dr. \u2018Femi stated.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thomas used the forum to appeal to the state governors to invest more<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">resources towards developing and sustaining the culture of health<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">insurance in their states, rather than the various intervention programmes<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">in the health sector which may not be sustainable on the long run.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2018\u2019The scheme\u201d, he said, \u2018\u2019has donated an ambulance to the Ikot-Ideh PHC,<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">so as to demonstrate the standard that the scheme expects state<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">governments to maintain in all the PHC Centres where CBHI will be<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">domiciled in all the states of the federation.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Speaking\u00a0 at the occasion, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Dr. Godswill<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Akpabio,\u00a0 who was represented by the State Commissioner of Health, Dr.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Emem Abasi Bassey, said the commitment of the government to the social<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">contract which existed between it and the people of the state made the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">flag off a reality.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Governor stated that the launch of the CBSHIP is driven by the strong<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">desire to ensure that effective and affordable healthcare is accessible to<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">every person in the state, as it will relief the people of the financial<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">burden associated with health seeking activities, particularly at the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">point of care.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Earlier in her welcome address, the country representative of Management<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sciences for Health (MSH), an arm of USAID, Dr. Zipporah Kpamor said the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">organization, which is a key technical partner of the state on healthcare<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">financing, has facilitated the formation of a Technical Working Group that<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">will co-ordinate and sustain the implementation of the CBSHIP programme.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">She said the organization has revived Village Development Committees in<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the 15 villages that make up the Ukana West Ward11, as well as the Ward<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Development Committee in the area, for community ownership of the project.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">She commended NHIS and the government and\u00a0 people of Akwa Ibom State, for<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">providing the enabling environment for the success of the flag-off of the<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">programme .<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At the occasion were members of the State Executive Council, leadership of<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the Local Government,\u00a0 traditional rulers and members of the
