{"id":30617,"date":"2014-08-27T20:33:06","date_gmt":"2014-08-27T19:33:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=30617"},"modified":"2014-08-27T20:33:06","modified_gmt":"2014-08-27T19:33:06","slug":"confab-report-roadmap-national-rebirth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/articles-opinions\/confab-report-roadmap-national-rebirth\/","title":{"rendered":"*Confab Report: Roadmap to national rebirth*"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1409167696793_2009\" class=\"base-card-body\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1409167696793_2008\" class=\"msg-body inner  undoreset\" tabindex=\"0\">*By Johnson Momodu*<\/p>\n<p>*The submission of the National Conference report to President Goodluck<br \/>\nJonathan on 21 August, 2014, was as relieving as it was historic.\u00a0 Going by<br \/>\nthe gale of criticisms that accompanied the idea from certain quarters, and<br \/>\nthe fears \u00e2\u20ac\u201cgenuine and imagined \u00e2\u20ac\u201c expressed over its deliberations,<br \/>\nmany *Nigerians<br \/>\nwere right to be apprehensive. Fears were rife that a national conference<br \/>\nat this point in our history would further divide, rather than unite<br \/>\nNigerians.\u00a0 However, five months after its inauguration, the conference<br \/>\nwound up on a very successful and heart-warming note.<\/p>\n<p>From its optimistic outcome, it is right to say that it is the most<br \/>\nsuccessful post-independent conference of its kind, and one whose report<br \/>\nhas the potential to recreate the nation and put it on the path of real<br \/>\ngreatness.\u00a0 However, for the 494 Nigerians assembled to address the<br \/>\nnation\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s fears, disappointments, aspirations and hopes which have<br \/>\naccumulated over 100 years, it was not a tea party. The favourable outcome<br \/>\nof their deliberations becomes even more remarkable when viewed against the<br \/>\narguments that preceded it.<\/p>\n<p>While some people contended that Nigeria\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s integrity would be compromised<br \/>\nby such a conference, others said it would lead to the nation\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s<br \/>\ndisintegration.\u00a0 For some unscrupulous politicians, it was an opportunity<br \/>\nlike no other to denigrate President Jonathan and play the usual political<br \/>\nsubterfuge.\u00a0 All sorts of weird motives were imputed into that singular<br \/>\neffort to bridge the gap of mistrust among our peoples, their nationalities<br \/>\nand address issues in our nationhood.\u00a0 Yet, for a third group, it was<br \/>\nsimply a design by Jonathan to shore up popularity and increase his support<br \/>\nbase against the 2015 election in which he is expected to stand.\u00a0 To this<br \/>\nthird group, the explanation that the conference will further strengthen<br \/>\nour understanding, expand the frontiers of our inclusiveness and deepen our<br \/>\nbond as one people, was simply a smokescreen.<\/p>\n<p>These all made the delegates\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 mandate of charting a new course for Nigeria<br \/>\nmore arduous.\u00a0 In the end, however, patriotism prevailed: their work did<br \/>\nnot end up another exercise in futility as the sceptics had predicted.\u00a0 The<br \/>\noutcome was resounding in its overall success.\u00a0 Leading the tirade against<br \/>\nthe National Conference was Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu.\u00a0 For a man who had<br \/>\nseverally made a case for the convocation of a national conference, his<br \/>\n*volte-face* was as intriguing as it was hypocritical.\u00a0 As usual with any<br \/>\npolitical project that does not feed his warped ego and clannish interests,<br \/>\nTinubu questioned government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s sincerity and dismissed the exercise as<br \/>\ndeceptive.<\/p>\n<p>It was most absurd coming from the leader of the opposition All<br \/>\nProgressives Congress (APC).\u00a0 But then, opposition to the conference was<br \/>\nnot limited to the APC as support for the conference was not unanimous even<br \/>\nwithin the President\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Peoples Democratic Party.\u00a0 For the like of Jigawa<br \/>\nState governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, who is becoming notorious for<br \/>\nconsistently playing the ethnic card, the dialogue lacks constitutional<br \/>\nbacking and is a flagrant abuse of democratic institutions. Even from<br \/>\nJonathan\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s backyard in the South-south, the Movement for the Emancipation<br \/>\nof the Niger Delta (MEND) believed the national conference was only for<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153the therapeutic benefits of letting off steam\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6\u00e2\u20ac with nothing else<br \/>\nto offer.<\/p>\n<p>How wrong they have all turned out to be!\u00a0 Why would President Jonathan<br \/>\nshore up his popularity by promoting a project that is as controversial as<br \/>\nthe National Conference?\u00a0 Truth be told, the President must be commended<br \/>\nfor showing courage and for responding in the best possible way to the<br \/>\nreality of emerging challenges in our national life.\u00a0 Not only did his<br \/>\ndecision to set up the confab pander to the yearnings of the people, it<br \/>\nalso provided an impartial platform to realistically examine and genuinely<br \/>\nresolve long-standing impediments to our cohesion and harmonious<br \/>\ndevelopment as a united nation.\u00a0 That it received the backing of a broad<br \/>\nspectrum of the nation\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s political leadership across party and ideological<br \/>\nlines, not least the leadership and members of the National Assembly,<br \/>\nspeaks volumes.<\/p>\n<p>Its success has also vindicated him and put a lie to the imputations of<br \/>\npersonal interest by those who rejected the idea for their selfish or<br \/>\npartisan reasons.\u00a0 His sincerity in embarking on that project is further<br \/>\nunderscored by the fact that no so-called &#8220;no go&#8221; areas were established<br \/>\nand the deliberations took place without the government interfering in any<br \/>\nway.\u00a0 The task has been the more arduous than any of the four earlier<br \/>\npost-independence Conferences in Nigeria: it did not only have the highest<br \/>\nmembership, it also sat for the shortest period: four and a half months.\u00a0 In<br \/>\naddressing and subsequently approving over 600 resolutions, mostly on<br \/>\nfundamental issues of law, public policy and the constitution, it showed<br \/>\nuncommon courage in dealing with all the divergent tendencies that came<br \/>\ninto play.<\/p>\n<p>As the conference chairman, Justice Idris Kutigi, surmised at the report<br \/>\npresentation, the fact that all the conference resolutions were adopted by<br \/>\nconsensus, and without having to vote or come to a division on any matte,r<br \/>\nhowever, important, was remarkable.\u00a0 So too is the fact that the official<br \/>\nReport of the Conference, including annexures of 22 volumes of<br \/>\napproximately 10,335 (ten thousand, three hundred and thirty-five) pages,<br \/>\nwas also adopted unanimously.
