Bayelsa State Government on Friday urged the people of the state not to panic as proactive measures have been put in place to check the spread of the deadly Ebola virus ravaging parts of the West African region.<\/span><\/div>\n
In a statement issued through his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, Governor Seriake Dickson allayed the fears of the people in the light of the recent outbreak of 3 Ebola cases in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.<\/span><\/div>\n
He noted that, in view of the close proximity of Bayelsa to Rivers State, coupled with the fact that, the people of the two states share a common historical and cultural heritage, it has become imperative to urge Bayelsans to remain calm.<\/span><\/div>\n
According to Governor Dickson,\u00a0government<\/span>\u00a0has created 103 surveillancecentres<\/span>\u00a0in all the local government areas as part of measures put in place to curtail the Ebola virus and the people have been put on red alert for suspected patients with the symptoms of the deadly virus to check its spread.<\/span><\/div>\n
Governor Dickson, who reiterated the call on the need for people to imbibe the culture of personal hygiene, noted that government has given adequate support to the 18 member Task Force made up of experienced medical professionals required to deal with any outbreak of the scourge.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0He said distribution of protective materials such as\u00a0sanitizers<\/span>, body gears, hand gloves were\u00a0on going<\/span>\u00a0and major isolation\u00a0centres<\/span>\u00a0have already been set up at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, Okolobiri, and the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa as well as other smaller units across the state for the containment of the virus.<\/span><\/div>\n
Commending the Federal Government\u2019s decision on the postponement ofresumption date<\/span>\u00a0of both public and private schools across the country, the Governor expressed optimism that, the measure would assist in checking the spread of the disease as it is likely to spread through crowded places like educational institutions, churches and markets.<\/span><\/div>\n
