{"id":30819,"date":"2014-09-02T12:40:51","date_gmt":"2014-09-02T11:40:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=30819"},"modified":"2014-09-02T12:40:51","modified_gmt":"2014-09-02T11:40:51","slug":"tinubu-ikimi-apc-tried-rehabilitate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/exclusive\/tinubu-ikimi-apc-tried-rehabilitate\/","title":{"rendered":"Tinubu To Ikimi: APC Tried To Rehabilitate You!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Leader of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has said\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">that the Party tried to rehabilitate Chief Tom Ikimi and make him atone\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">for his &#8220;grievous&#8221; sins against Nigerians but he abused the magnanimity\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">extended to him.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ikimi served as the Foreign Affairs Minister in the administration of late\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">General Sanni Abacha and was very vocal in defending the dictatorial\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">regime.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The former Lagos State Governor also denied ever receiving any $1.7\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Billion contract from the Petroleum Minister, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">on behalf of Oando.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tinubu in a response to allegations against him by chief Ikimi said APC\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">was magnanimous to have allowed the likes of Ikimi into its fold so they\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">can be rehabilitated.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He regretted that instead of atoning for his sins against Nigerians and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">getting rehabilitated, he abused the magnanimity and was never committed\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">to the APC ideology.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;He was always playing out a PDP script. He only wanted the chairmanship\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">of the party as a bargaining chip for negotiations with his benefactors. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">His defection purportedly on account of the loss of the chairmanship of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the party is a mere subterfuge, once his ploy failed he had no other\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">objective within the party, I knew he would go back to his sponsors. He is\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">back in the company he deserves. And APC is better for it,&#8221; Tinubu said in\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">a statement sent to Pointblanknews.com.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The statement reads:<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Reply to Chief Tom Ikimi.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I ordinarily would not have responded to Tom Ikimi&#8217;s lengthy chronicle of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">falsehoods, cheap blackmail and abuse. My only reason for this response is\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">that I know Tom Ikimi&#8217;s style. He subscribes to the view that no matter\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">how unbelievable a lie may sound if you brazenly assert it and repeat it\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">often enough you may persuade many that it is in fact true.\u00a0 I have seen \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ikimi perpetrate this deviousness in his years in public life.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">1. Regarding Ikimi&#8217;s bid for the Chairmanship of the Party. It was clear\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">to practically everyone who had the interest of the party at heart that we\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">simply could not have a man of Tom Ikimi&#8217;s antecedents as Chair of the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">party. As chairman of the NRC, one of the only two political parties in\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the country under the military transition programme, Tom Ikimi not only\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">connived with the then military regime to annul the elections, terminate\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the democratic process and sell off his party. He became Abacha&#8217;s foreign\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">minister, convincing the world that heinous state murders like the hanging\\\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">of Ken Saro Wiwa were just acts! If Ikimi were the Chair of APC the party\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">would have to sleep with both eyes open lest its chairman sell off the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">party before day break .No matter what anyone may say about me it is\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">unlikely that I can be accused of supporting incompetent or morally\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">light-weight individuals for important political positions. My philosophy\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">is to put the best forward, men and women of competence and integrity, who\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">can stand up to us politicians to challenge us and say no when necessary.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Such people are not noisy or able to gain attention by being loud, I\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">believe my role is to do all I can to project them. Who in their right\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">mind would compare the highly principled Chief Bisi Akande, or Chief\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Oyegun with a Tom Ikimi? Either of these two men are known for their\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">no-nonsense styles, not once in their careers would you hear that they\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">betrayed a cause or were anybody&#8217;s stooge.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">2. Ikimi also concocts a story of a meeting he claims I had with Deziani\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">on the Oando\/ ConocoPhillips transaction on the eve of the APC Convention.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Only a Tom Ikimi can come up with the absurd falsehood that on the eve of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the APC Convention when I was in crucial meetings practically round the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">clock I was meeting with the Minister for Petroleum! What exactly would\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">have been the point of such a meeting especially on the eve of the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Convention? Was it to prevent Tom Ikimi from emerging as Chairman of the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">APC? To what end? Of what value would it be to anyone except Ikimi\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">himself? Besides if this was so why he is back to the same party that\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">purportedly planned his down fall?<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What is the Oando\/ConocoPhillips transaction anyway? For those who do not\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">know this is a private sale of the assets of ConocoPhillips to Oando.\u00a0 It\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">was not patronage of any kind from the Federal government. The Federal\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">government&#8217;s involvement was merely to formally consent to the sale. I was\\\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">not involved and I have never been involved in any of Oando&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">transactions.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Typically he plays on the fact that Wale Tinubu of Oando is my nephew. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Oando has been thoroughly investigated by South African and British\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">authorities in the past 5 years as part of the process of listing the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">company on the stock exchanges of those countries. Those rigorous and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">comprehensive investigations conducted by the governments and risk control\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">investigators are to discover the actual ownership of shares in the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">company. Politically exposed persons like myself are prime targets for\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">those investigations. All these investigations have shown that I have no\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">investments in Oando. My public position on the entire transaction is that\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">if an indigenous Nigerian oil and gas entity run by young serious minded \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nigerians raise money transparently in the international capital markets\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">to purchase private assets of a multi-national the Federal government\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ought to give its consent. That it took so long is shameful. The\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Conoco\/Phillips transaction was a $1.7 billion dollars investment in\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nigeria that would create more jobs,witness the establishment of allied\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">industries and make the Nigerian Economy\u00a0 more attractive. I would have\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">been extremely proud to have made such a transaction possible.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">3. Regarding the nonsense about selling out on Ribadu. I think common\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">sense should dictate that if ever such a deal were reached we would have<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">had to inform our members in all the States. How could that have been done<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">secretly? How do you tell hundreds of thousands of people not to vote for<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">your own party without it becoming public knowledge?<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At the formation of the APC, a crucial debate ensued about what to do\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">about persons like Ikimi who had done awful things in the past, but who\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">were now minded to align with the progressive tendency in Nigerian\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">politics. Should we forever blacklist them? This would have been the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">easiest route, but it would have kept rancor alive. It would have made us\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">slaves to the bleakest chapters of our past. Instead we opted to extend\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the hand of brotherhood, reconcile and put the past behind us. This would\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">enable a broader political consensus, while also giving the likes of Ikimi\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">an opportunity to atone for their grievous wrongs against the people and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">be rehabilitated.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We recognized that many leading Nigerians had committed acts of shame.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some for private profit, others who were otherwise decent people who had\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">become prisoners to a terrible system.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Not surprisingly, Ikimi acting true to type abuse that magnanimity. He was\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">never sincerely committed to the party. He was always playing out a PDP\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">script.
