Members of\u00a0the Islamic State, a\u00a0violent group of\u00a0extremists presently terrorizing Iraq and\u00a0Syria, have released a\u00a0video threatening President Vladimir Putin and\u00a0vowing to\u00a0wage war in\u00a0Russia’s restive North Caucasus.<\/p>\n

Message to\u00a0Putin<\/h3>\n

A\u00a0video<\/a>\u00a0released by\u00a0Al Arabiya and\u00a0reportedly filmed in\u00a0a seized airport in\u00a0the Syrian province of\u00a0Raqqa features an\u00a0Islamic State fighter seated in\u00a0a military jet, saying: “This message is for\u00a0you, Vladimir Putin! These are the\u00a0aircraft you sent to\u00a0Bashar [Assad], and\u00a0we’re going to\u00a0send them to\u00a0you. Remember that!”<\/p>\n

The\u00a0voice of\u00a0a Russian speaker can also be heard in\u00a0the video, describing the\u00a0jets seized by\u00a0Islamic State fighters. “This is Russian technology,” he says.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Islamic State has openly declared war on\u00a0the U.S., driving its point home by\u00a0having beheaded two U.S. journalists in\u00a0as many weeks. This is the\u00a0first time members of\u00a0the group have personally taunted the\u00a0Russian president.<\/p>\n

“We will with the\u00a0consent of\u00a0Allah free Chechnya and\u00a0all of\u00a0the Caucasus! The\u00a0Islamic State is here and\u00a0will stay here, and\u00a0it will spread with the\u00a0grace of\u00a0Allah!” a\u00a0fighter is shown saying in\u00a0the video, which is available on\u00a0YouTube with Russian subtitles.<\/p>\n

Addressing Putin personally, the\u00a0fighter added: “Your throne has already been shaken, it is under threat and\u00a0will fall with our arrival [in Russia]. \u2026 We’re already on\u00a0our way with the\u00a0 will of\u00a0Allah!”<\/p>\n

Syria and\u00a0Rise of\u00a0IS<\/h3>\n

Russia has provoked condemnation from\u00a0the Islamic State for\u00a0seemingly having shielded the\u00a0Syrian regime through the\u00a0course of\u00a0the country’s civil war. In\u00a0the new video, radical fighters vow to\u00a0destroy Assad, whom they refer to\u00a0as a\u00a0“pig.”<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Syrian conflict has thrust the\u00a0Islamic State into\u00a0the spotlight, with an\u00a0estimated 50,000 fighters in\u00a0the country, according to\u00a0the Syrian Observatory for\u00a0Human Rights. In\u00a0June, members of\u00a0the group seized control of\u00a0several cities in\u00a0Iraq, where there are now an\u00a0estimated 30,000 Islamic State fighters.<\/p>\n

Although no link has been proven between militants in\u00a0Russia’s turbulent North Caucasus and\u00a0the Islamic State, Russia’s Federal Security Service has estimated that hundreds of\u00a0residents of\u00a0the North Caucasus have gone to\u00a0fight in\u00a0Syria.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0the newly released video, members of\u00a0the Islamic State declare the\u00a0same goal as Russia’s domestic militant group the\u00a0Caucasus Emirate\u00a0\u2014 a\u00a0development that is sure to\u00a0alarm experts in\u00a0Russia who have warned of\u00a0radicalized fighters returning from\u00a0Syria to\u00a0Russian soil.<\/p>\n

Grozny Reacts<\/h3>\n

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov took to\u00a0Instagram on\u00a0Wednesday to\u00a0provide the\u00a0first reaction by\u00a0a Russian official to\u00a0the Islamic State’s warning, referring to\u00a0it as a\u00a0“childish threat.”<\/p>\n

In\u00a0a\u00a0statement<\/a>\u00a0posted alongside a\u00a0heavily-filtered photo of\u00a0himself wearing a\u00a0T-shirt emblazoned with Putin’s face, Kadyrov said the\u00a0Islamic State fighters were “saying only what their masters in\u00a0the West’s security services were telling them to\u00a0say.”<\/p>\n

“These jerks have nothing to\u00a0do with Islam. They are the\u00a0blatant enemies of\u00a0Muslims all over the\u00a0world. Naive people decided to\u00a0threaten Chechnya and\u00a0all of\u00a0Russia with two aircraft. They can sit in\u00a02,000 aircraft and\u00a0still not make it to\u00a0Russia,” Kadyrov wrote.<\/p>\n

“I declare, with all responsibility, that whoever gets it into\u00a0their heads to\u00a0threaten Russia and\u00a0speak the\u00a0name of\u00a0President Vladimir Putin will be destroyed as soon as he says it,” he wrote, adding: “We won’t even wait for\u00a0him to\u00a0sit at\u00a0the helm of\u00a0a plane.”<\/p>\n

On\u00a0Tuesday, prior to\u00a0the video’s release, Russia’s Foreign Ministry condemned the\u00a0group’s “horrific crimes” in\u00a0an official statement, calling for\u00a0China and\u00a0Western countries to\u00a0join forces in\u00a0helping bring an\u00a0end to\u00a0the group’s reign of\u00a0terror.<\/p>\n

Russia’s Defense Ministry sent several attack helicopters to\u00a0Baghdad on\u00a0Monday to\u00a0help Iraq’s military fight the\u00a0Islamic State. In\u00a0early July, it provided five Su-24 fighter aircraft to\u00a0the country.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
