{"id":31270,"date":"2014-09-18T15:40:42","date_gmt":"2014-09-18T14:40:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=31270"},"modified":"2014-09-18T15:40:42","modified_gmt":"2014-09-18T14:40:42","slug":"lagos-government-seizes-doctors-august-salary-participation-nma-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/exclusive\/lagos-government-seizes-doctors-august-salary-participation-nma-strike\/","title":{"rendered":"Lagos government seizes doctors\u2019 August salary over participation in NMA strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1411047242298_19111\" style=\"color: #000000; text-align: justify;\">The Lagos state government has seized the August salaries of doctors in its hospitals for participating in the recently concluded Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, strike.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1411047242298_19105\" style=\"color: #000000; text-align: justify;\">All doctors working in government owned hospitals downed tools for almost two months over 24 demands they wanted the federal government to address.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1411047242298_19106\" style=\"color: #000000; text-align: justify;\">Some of their demands included: the government improving residency programme in Nigeria, increasing doctors\u2019 hazard allowances from N5,000 to N100,000 and improving facilities in hospitals all over the country.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1411047242298_19116\" style=\"color: #000000; text-align: justify;\">The doctors agreed to call off the strike because of the Ebola outbreak in Nigeria but on the grounds that no doctor would be punished for participating in the strike.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1411047242298_19128\" style=\"color: #000000; text-align: justify;\">Unfortunately, while doctors in other states have settled back to work, those in Lagos State owned hospitals are lamenting the seizure of their August salaries for joining the strike.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1411047242298_19127\" style=\"color: #000000; text-align: justify;\">Unrelenting, the doctors have written several letters to the Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola, appealing for his assistance.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1411047242298_19126\" style=\"color: #000000; text-align: justify;\">In the four letters the doctors appealed to the governor to come to their rescue.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1411047242298_19117\" style=\"color: #000000; text-align: justify;\">In one of the letters dated September 17 and titled: Re: Letter of Appeal for Members of Medical Guild, the Lagos state NMA appealed for the intervention of Mr. Fashola in the situation.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1411047242298_19125\" style=\"color: #000000; text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe write this letter as a follow up to our previous letter dated 9th September, 2014 in which we appealed for your intervention on the above subject matter.<\/div>\n<div id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1411047242298_19124\" style=\"color: #000000; text-align: justify;\">\u201cOur colleagues in other states have received their emoluments for the period of the national strike.
