{"id":31336,"date":"2014-09-21T05:02:28","date_gmt":"2014-09-21T04:02:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=31336"},"modified":"2014-09-21T05:02:28","modified_gmt":"2014-09-21T04:02:28","slug":"privatisation-elecrcity-lies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/articles-opinions\/privatisation-elecrcity-lies\/","title":{"rendered":"Privatisation Of Elecrcity Lies"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li>\n<div id=\"yiv1913714191\" style=\"color: #000000;\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191yahoo_quoted\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191y_msg_container\">\n<div id=\"yiv1913714191\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191MsoNormal\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><b>By Emmanuel Onwubiko<\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191MsoNormal\">Since flag independence, Nigerians have known only but one unfortunate fact concerning their political life-lies by the ruling elites.<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191MsoNormal\">These cacophony of official lies have become so sophisticated going by the fact that local officials in Nigeria now connive with some so-called Ivy league educated White elites to force down our throats certain sugar- coated lies on how to improve social services and make life better for the ordinary citizenry.<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191MsoNormal\">So at the topmost echelons of the\u00a0<span id=\"misspell-1\" class=\"mark\">Bretton<\/span>\u00a0wood finance institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund [IMF] \u00a0some fast speaking propagandists have packaged and delivered to the corridors of political power on the African continent and much of the so-called third World countries certain anti-poor policies that they have called privatization of hitherto government- run social services in the electricity power, educational, health and clean water sectors of the economy which prior to the arrival of the privatization policy supported by the World Bank and International Monetary Fund were provided on very subsidized rates by the governments of these nations.<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191MsoNormal\">In Nigeria, this craze for privatization gained notoriety with the reemergence of civilian democracy in 1999 even as the electricity power sector received its own baptism of fire in the name of reforms around the year 2005 when the national assembly passed into law the Nigerian electricity power sector reforms bill into law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria resulting in the so-called\u00a0<span id=\"misspell-2\" class=\"mark\">unbundling<\/span>\u00a0of the hitherto notoriously inefficient National Electricity Power Authority [<span id=\"misspell-3\" class=\"mark\">NEPA<\/span>] into six transmission and distribution companies which were cleverly handed over to some smooth talking economic parasites with connection to the corridors of power and ever since this so-called hand over of these electricity power plants was completed, Nigerians have known nothing but lamentations and regrets\u00a0going by the emerging facts that the ghosts of criminal inefficiency and corruption which ruined the erstwhile publicly owned [<span id=\"misspell-4\" class=\"mark\">NEPA<\/span>]\u00a0electricity power authority have become even more troubling than Nigerians ever imagined.<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191MsoNormal\">Nigerian consumers of electricity power have been forced by these greedy new local and international owners of our collective heritage to pay higher bills for nothing but even much more poor services compared with the defunct notorious\u00a0<span id=\"misspell-5\" class=\"mark\">NEPA<\/span>. These new owners have also upped the ante in the manufacturing f lies and concocted reasons for this criminal breaches of contractual trust which the consumers have faced since they took over the distribution of electricity power.<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191MsoNormal\">From this bag of old tricks, they only recently invented old lies to buttress why electricity power services in most places even in the nation&#8217;s political capital of Abuja have assumed the worst case scenario. And so we woke up few days back to read In the press that\u00a0the national electricity grid has lost 190megawatts (<span id=\"misspell-6\" class=\"mark\">mw<\/span>) after fire has engulfed a 60<span id=\"misspell-7\" class=\"mark\">MVA<\/span>, 330\/123<span id=\"misspell-8\" class=\"mark\">KV<\/span>\u00a0transformer in\u00a0<span id=\"misspell-9\" class=\"mark\">Apo<\/span>\u00a0transmission substation. This\u00a0sad tales came after few days that the minister of power had glibly told Nigerians that electricity power supply will improve significantly in September and would reach the proverbial 10,000 megawatts by the first quarter of next year.<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191MsoNormal\">The media quoting the propaganda material sent to them by these new owners stated that however, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (<span id=\"misspell-10\" class=\"mark\">TCN<\/span>) said it has made efforts to restore normal electricity supply to affected areas in Abuja metropolis.<br clear=\"none\" \/>The ugly situation as rightly observed by the reporters\u00a0has led to a drastic reduction of power supply, from over 4,000<span id=\"misspell-11\" class=\"mark\">mw<\/span>, last week, to about 3,082<span id=\"misspell-12\" class=\"mark\">mw<\/span>\u00a0this week.<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191MsoNormal\">Specifically,\u00a0<span id=\"misspell-13\" class=\"mark\">TCN<\/span>\u00a0in a statement issued by its Assistant General Manager, Public Affairs, Mr Dave\u00a0<span id=\"misspell-14\" class=\"mark\">Ifabiyi<\/span>, said the transmission capability has reduced by 190<span id=\"misspell-15\" class=\"mark\">mw<\/span>, noting that Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (<span id=\"misspell-16\" class=\"mark\">AEDC<\/span>) which has a maximum supply of 46<span id=\"misspell-17\" class=\"mark\">mw<\/span>\u00a0from the affected substation will soon have its load demand restored. Over forty eight ours after this promise was made in the media, consumers in much of Abuja municipal area have yet o see any electricity power services restored.<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191MsoNormal\">The company had\u00a0assured the consumers that\u00a0 its quick response engineering team have since commenced work to isolate the affected 60<span id=\"misspell-18\" class=\"mark\">MVA<\/span>, 330\/123<span id=\"misspell-19\" class=\"mark\">kV<\/span>\u00a0transformer and replace cables of the 2&#215;45<span id=\"misspell-20\" class=\"mark\">MVA<\/span>\u00a0transformers, to restore service through the 2&#215;45<span id=\"misspell-21\" class=\"mark\">MVA<\/span>\u00a0and 1&#215;100<span id=\"misspell-22\" class=\"mark\">MVA<\/span>power transformers not affected by the fire.<\/p>\n<div id=\"yiv1913714191yqtfd88207\" class=\"yiv1913714191yqt8013186274\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"yiv1913714191yqtfd75612\" class=\"yiv1913714191yqt8013186274\">\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191MsoNormal\">Explaining the cause of the inferno, the statement said it started after an explosive sound caused by direct lightning strike at the 132\/33<span id=\"misspell-23\" class=\"mark\">kV<\/span><span id=\"misspell-24\" class=\"mark\">switchyard<\/span>, with smoke engulfing the relay room and cable trenches within the control room.\u00a0<br clear=\"none\" \/>It said engineers quickly disconnected the substation from the transmission grid to forestall further damage.<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191MsoNormal\">As a result, it said, parts of Abuja metropolis, including\u00a0<span id=\"misspell-25\" class=\"mark\">Garki<\/span>,\u00a0<span id=\"misspell-26\" class=\"mark\">Asokoro<\/span>,\u00a0<span id=\"misspell-27\" class=\"mark\">Lugbe<\/span>,\u00a0<span id=\"misspell-28\" class=\"mark\">Karu<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"misspell-29\" class=\"mark\">Keffi<\/span>\u00a0and environs were experiencing power rationing.\u00a0<br clear=\"none\" \/>It, however, assured that on completion of repair work and cables\u2019 replacement, normal transmission to distribution load\u00a0<span id=\"misspell-30\" class=\"mark\">centres<\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0<span id=\"misspell-31\" class=\"mark\">Garki<\/span>,<span id=\"misspell-32\" class=\"mark\">Asokoro<\/span>,\u00a0<span id=\"misspell-33\" class=\"mark\">Lugbe<\/span>, International Airport and\u00a0<span id=\"misspell-34\" class=\"mark\">Karu<\/span>\u00a0business areas would commence.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191MsoNormal\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"yiv1913714191MsoNormal\">These cock and bull stories which were inherited from the dysfunctional\u00a0<span id=\"misspell-35\" class=\"mark\">NEPA<\/span>\u00a0are no longer convincing but these rogue elements\u00a0now running the electricity power plants still have the effrontery to force down our throats these lies only because the people are yet to cry out loud and clear to demand their right if indeed customers are king as is known in civilized climes. Sadly, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission [<span id=\"misspell-36\" class=\"mark\">NERC<\/span>] have done very little to ensure that the rights of consumers are respected.\u00a0<span id=\"misspell-37\" class=\"mark\">NERC<\/span>\u00a0is only interested in taking care of their staff and top management and cares less about their mandate.
